COMMERCE, Texas – The Midwestern State women's soccer team and Texas A&M-Commerce battled for 110 minutes before Sunday's Lone Star Conference matchup ended in a scoreless draw at Lion Soccer Field.
"We were playing a good team and a very well-coached team that just came off of beating the No. 7 team (Angelo State) in the country," said head coach
Damian Clarke. "I think we proved that we can compete with anyone. It was good to get that point on the road, our first conference point."
TAMUC (5-2-1, 1-0-1 LSC) came out firing with five shots on goal in the first 20 minutes of play, only to have the LSC Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year
Courtney Burnette collect all five attempts to keep it a scoreless contest.
Midwestern State (3-2-2, 0-1-1 LSC) attacked late in the first half with their first shots on goal coming from junior midfielder
Liz Navarette and senior midfielder
Morgan Hannon in the final minute of the period. However, TAMUC senior goalkeeper Courtnie Northern picked up each attempt for a scoreless contest at the half.
The Mustangs came close to moving ahead in the 81st minute as a shot by sophomore forward
Destinee Williamson hit the post to deny Midwestern a chance to take a late lead.
Senior midfielder
Kayla Cheesman was a bright spot for the Mustangs offense late in regulation, placing two shots on goal for the Maroon and Gold.
Burnette recorded two saves in the first overtime period while TAMUC senior forward Jade Bell had her shot hit the crossbar in the 98th minute to send the match to a second overtime.
It was quiet second overtime offensively for both teams as Navarette fired the only shot of the period in the 108th minute with Northern collecting the save.
The Mustangs finished with an 18-13 advantage in shots while the Lions placed 10 shots on goal compared to five for Midwestern State.
The Mustangs recorded their fourth shutout of the season with Burnette (3-2-2) collecting nine saves in 110 minutes of action.
"It was more of a collective (defensive) effort," Clarke said. "Courtney did have a good game but the back flow was tremendous. We had some players that had to play and step up. We shut out a team that doesn't get shut out very often."
Midwestern State will return to MSU Soccer Field for the first time since the opening week of the season when they begin a four-match homestand Friday against Eastern New Mexico at 8 p.m.
