Mustangs blank Greyhounds in LSC home opener, 2-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Two first half goals by sophomore forward Destinee Williamson were plenty for the Midwestern State women's soccer team Friday night in a 2-0 victory over Eastern New Mexico in the Lone Star Conference home opener for the Mustangs.

Williamson netted her third and fourth goals of the season with strikes less than 20 minutes into the contest to give Midwestern State (4-2-2, 1-1-1 LSC) an early advantage.

Williamson's first score came in the 15th minute as a pass from junior midfielder Lauren Fambrough found Williamson before she took a shot from the left side of the box for a 1-0 lead.

After receiving a ball from junior defender Haley Britton, Williamson gave the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage in the 20th minute, dribbling inside the six-yard box before sending a rocket into the left corner of the net.

"Destinee stretches people out in a way they can't deal with," said head coach Damian Clarke. "She's getting better in front of the goal, and it's the right time for her to start gaining confidence."

The Mustangs defense was once again superb as they recorded their fifth shutout of the season and third in the last four matches. Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Burnette had a quiet night as the Greyhounds (3-5-1, 0-2-0 LSC) managed just one shot on goal among their four shots.

"We're always going to be tough to score on," Clarke said. "That's a mark of Midwestern State soccer. That's always going to be a staple of who we are."

Williamson along with junior forward Aly Wade and senior midfielder Morgan Hannon each placed two shots on goal to lead the Mustangs, who totaled 13 shots on the night.

"I think Eastern New Mexico played very well," Clarke said. "They made the game difficult for us. We won playing bad, which is a good sign for us if we're capable of winning not playing our best. The same time I have to take my hat off to Eastern New Mexico because they kept the ball better than we did. We need to continue to improve."

Midwestern State continues its homestand Sunday when the Mustangs host West Texas A&M in the Highway 287 Challenge at 1 p.m. at MSU Soccer Field.
