Mustangs swept by Lubbock Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas – Lubbock Christian recorded a .283 hitting percentage while holding the Midwestern State volleyball team to just a .010 mark as the Lady Chaps posted a 3-0 sweep (25-11, 25-22, 25-13) Saturday afternoon at the Rip Griffin Center.

It was a tough first set for the Mustangs (4-9, 0-2 LSC), hitting -.132 as LCU claimed a dominant 25-11 first set win following 12 MSU attack errors in the frame.

The Lady Chaps (7-6, 3-2 HC) jumped out early with a 10-3 lead to force a Midwestern State timeout. LCU continued to run away from the Mustangs, holding a 20-7 advantage before freshman outside hitter Kelsey Purcell ended a 5-0 LCU spurt. However, the Mustangs deficit was too much as the home team took a 1-0 lead.

It was a close second set before the Mustangs took a 13-8 lead following back-to-back attack errors by the Lady Chaps. With Midwestern State holding an 18-13 advantage, LCU put together a 5-0 run to even the set at 18 apiece. A kill by sophomore outside hitter Meghan Bettis gave the Mustangs a 22-21 lead but a kill from LCU freshman outside hitter Emily Hanaway capped off a 4-0 run to give the Lady Chaps a 25-22 set win and 2-0 lead in the match.

After a kill by senior outside hitter Hunter Porter made it 7-7 in the third set, the Lady Chaps went on a 5-0 run to take control at 12-7. The Mustangs were only able to pull back within three as LCU recorded a 25-13 third set win for the sweep.

Bettis led the Mustangs with seven kills while Purcell added six in the loss.
