No. 9 Mustangs continue winning ways with 5-0 shutout over Tigers

DALLAS – A trio of first half goals set the stage for another dominant victory for the No. 9 Midwestern State men's soccer team Sunday afternoon as the Mustangs claimed a 5-0 shutout win over Ouachita Baptist at the Richland College Soccer Complex.

The Mustangs (4-0-0) continued to shine on both sides of the ball as the Maroon and Gold totaled a 31-7 shot advantage with a 13-2 edge in shots on goal. With the shutout win, junior goalkeeper Noah Fazekas (4-0-0) posted his first clean sheet of the season after allowing one goal in each of the three previous contests.

Midwestern broke a scoreless match in the 22nd minute as junior midfielder Gabriel Cavalcante delivered a ball to junior forward Christian Okeke, who fired from the right side of the box to find the left corner of the net for a 1-0 Mustangs advantage.

The Mustangs stretched their lead five minutes later as senior forward Albert Rodriguez gave MSU a 2-0 lead with a shot from inside the box for his team-leading fifth score of the season.

Before the half ended, sophomore forward Erick Chapa assisted on a Cavalcante rocket from 35 yards out that found the left side of the net for a 3-0 Mustangs lead at the break.

Midwestern continued to run away from Ouachita Baptist (1-3-0) in the second period as back-to-back goals from junior forward Leon Taylor shut the door on an OBU comeback attempt.

The Mustangs will return to MSU Soccer Field next weekend, facing Texas A&M International to begin the weekend slate Friday at 7 p.m. before a 1 p.m. contest against Newman on Sunday.
