Mustangs battle Mountaineers to 2-2 draw

GUNNISON, Colo. – The Midwestern State women's soccer team battled Western State for 110 minutes at 7,698 feet elevation before the match ended in a 2-2 draw Sunday afternoon at Gateway Field.

The Mustangs (2-1-1) denied the Mountaineers a chance at victory with an equalizer in the 57th minute from junior forward Aly Wade, scoring from the middle of the box off a pass from freshman midfielder Hayley Rohleder.

Following Wade's goal, both teams attempted to end the contest in regulation with the Mustangs placing three shots on goal in the final 30 minutes while Western (2-1-1) totaled two. However, what was an offensive shootout in the opening minutes ended in a defensive battle as the squads each picked up their first draw of the young season.

In the first half, Midwestern went ahead in the second minute as Rohleder notched her first career goal with a shot from the six-yard box off a cross from junior forward Nicole Coetzer to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.

Western responded with its first goal of the match less than two minutes later as senior forward Sadie Stark fired past sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Burnette for a 1-1 match in the fourth minute.

The Mountaineers took the lead in the 27th minute as sophomore forward Paige Massey found sophomore forward Jennifer Kahle, who gave Western a 2-1 advantage with a shot from the top of the box.

In the extra period, the Mustangs placed four shots on goal but were unable to get a shot past senior goalkeeper Meghan Jedrzejewski, who collected 12 saves on the day.

Burnette (2-1-1) earned the decision for Midwestern, playing 91 minutes between the posts with eight saves and two goals against. Redshirt freshman Brooke Bottensek collected one save in her first career action for the Mustangs.

Midwestern led 21-16 in shots and 14-11 in shots on goal including a 6-3 lead in shots during the overtime period.

Senior midfielder Morgan Hannon led the Mustangs with six shots with four on target while junior defender Haley Britton placed all three of her shots on goal.

Midwestern continues its road swing Saturday with a trip to Bethany, Oklahoma, to take on Southern Nazarene in a 2 p.m. contest.
