Mustangs take first two from Texas Woman's

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State swept its home opening doubleheader Friday night claiming wins of 4-2 and 15-5 over Texas Woman's in Lone Star Conference play at Mustangs Park.

The Mustangs and Pioneers complete the four-game set with a twin bill Saturday afternoon. First pitches are set for 1 and 3 p.m.

Back-to-back home runs by Shelby Carter and Taylor Bermudes keyed a three-run sixth inning in Game 1 as MSU rallied from a 2-1 deficit to claim a 4-2 win.

The teams exchanged in the first inning as senior third baseman Kelley Schaefer delivered a run-scoring single to plate Haley Howerton, who reached on an infield and advanced to second on an illegal pitch.

Texas Woman's regained the lead in the fifth as Sarah Wittenburg reached on a leadoff double and came around to score on Nicole Nordie's single to give the Pioneers a 2-1 advantage.

MSU sophomore Erin Knox claimed the win in the circle to improve to 5-2 on the season permitting one earned run on five hits in seven innings.

Sophomore catcher Baylee Voigt paced the Mustangs' seven-hit attack by going 2-for-3 including a double.

The Mustangs jumped on TWU for nine runs in the first inning to put the nightcap away quickly.

Sophomore pitcher Katlyn Holmes highlighted the inning with a two-run double while Katelyn Vinson ripped a another run-scoring two-bagger to cap the inning

Vinson added her seventh homer of the season -- a two-run rocket to left field -- in a five-run third frame which was capped by Katelyn Potts' two-run single to push the MSU advantage to 14-3 through three innings.

Vinson would drive in her fourth run of the game on a single to center field in the fourth.

Texas Woman's managed three runs in the third and singles runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Holmes earned the win in the circle to improve to 8-4 on the season allowing two earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and a walk in five innings.

Vinson paced the MSU attack going 3-for-4 with four RBIs while junior Paige Stevens and Holmes tacked on two hits each.
