WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The Midwestern State Mustangs put the Cameron Aggies on ice, 73-67, and secure the 3-seed in the Lone Star Conference tournament.
Senior night at the Dome was a wire-to-wire victory for the Mustangs, using hot first half shooting and tenacious defense to spark the victory.
MSU (21-7 overall, 10-4 LSC) made it 5 in a row against the Aggies (12-14, 4-10) dating back to January 23, 2013. The Mustangs had 4 different players score in double digits, led by senior forward
Xavier Blackburn with 13.
From the opening tip, the Mustangs were in control. A quick 5-0 MSU to start the game set the tone for the first half. The Midwestern defense kept the Aggies from scoring a field goal for the first 11:19 of the game. By that time MSU had pushed the score to 24-4.
MSU kept their hooves to the pedal, stretching the lead to 28 by halftime, 47-19. MSU forced 15 Cameron turnovers in the half and converted those into 21 points. MSU's bench, "The Stable", outscored the Aggies 18-5 in the half. Junior guard
Hershell Grant led the Mustangs from the bench with 7 first half points.
MSU ended the half shooting a red hot 52.9 percent from the field including five 3-pointers.
Xavier Blackburn was in rhythm scoring 10 points and grabbing 6 rebounds.
The second half started out like the first ended; Midwestern State kept pouring on the defense. MSU swatted 5 shots in the second half, with
Trevor Fuller and
Xavier Blackburn each blocking two Cameron shots.
Cameron would respond late in the half. A 16 point second half performance from Deondre Ray and 10 points from Jamaal Brantley paced the Aggies in the final half. Cameron used a 17-4 run over the last 6:03 to claw back to within 4 points at 71-67.
A missed three point attempt and foul in the final seconds sent
Khapri Alston to the line for the clinching free throws for the Mustangs. MSU combined for a 13-18 effort as a team from the charity stripe.
Senior guard
Bretson McNeal ended the night with 12 points, while
Hershell Grant added 11.
Khapri Alston ended the night perfect from the floor, shooting 3-for-3 from the field and going 4-of-4 from the line for 10 points.
Next up for the Mustangs is an immediate rematch with the Cameron Aggies in the Lone Star Conference tournament. Tip-off for the #3 seeded Mustangs and the #6 seeded Aggies will be at 2:30 p.m. at the Allen Event Center in Allen, Texas.
