Mustangs hold 3-point shooting clinic in Commerce, drill Lions for 5th straight win

COMMERCE, Texas - The MSU Mustangs saw 5 players score in double digits en route to their 5th straight win, defeating Texas A&M-Commerce 87-69 on Saturday night.

Midwestern State (18-3, 9-2) was red hot from the field at Commerce field house. The Mustangs shot a blistering 52.8 percent from the floor for the game as well as an amazing 52.2 percent from beyond the arc. The 12-23 effort from behind the line is good for a tie for third all-time MSU 3-point makes in a single game, and the most since January 2004.

MSU pushed the tempo early against the Lions (11-9, 5-5) forcing 13 first half turnovers and converting those into 20 points. A steal by Shatoia Gober with 5:38 to play in the first led to a layup by Taylor Dowd, giving the Mustangs a 21 point first half lead. Dowd led all scorers at the half with 10.

Midwestern claimed a 49-30 halftime lead, almost solely on the back of the 3-ball. Lisa Hampton and Kathryn Odom both nailed two first half triples, leading MSU to 8-14 shooting from deep.,

The second half saw the Lions make a dent in the MSU lead, trimming it to 15 after free throws by Abigail Leaupepe-Tele.

The Mustangs answered by raining more triples, building a 27 point lead with 12:10 left in the game. All told, MSU nailed another four 3-pointers in the second half.

Players with double digits for MSU include Lisa Hampton (17), Andrea Carter (14), Shatoia Gober (13), Taylor Dowd (12), and Kathryn Odom with a career-high 10 points.

Next up for the Mustangs is a trip to rival West Texas A&M to battle the Buffs on Wednesday, February 11. Tip-off at the First United Bank Center is set for 5:30 p.m.
