SAN ANTONIO -- Midwestern State flashed its depth to upend D1 Incarnate Word 5-2 Friday afternoon at the Mabry Tennis Center.
Playing without singles' stalwarts
Kayla Casey and
Courtney Anderson , who combined for 36 wins last season, the Mustangs claimed victory at four of the six singles' positions and also earned the doubles' point to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Senior
Taylor Coffman dominated the decisive set over Matea Zumunik 6-0 after spliting the first sets 6-2, 4-6 at the No. 2 position, while
Lauren Pineda,
Paige Boykin and
Lindsay Nochowicz rolled to straight set wins at Nos. 3-6 to clinch the decision for the Mustangs.
Junior Madeline Schorlemmer pushed Incarnate Word's Rachel Sadiq to split sets playing her second match at the No. 1 position before falling 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 while UIW's Antea Dedic claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win over
Alexis Arrieta at No. 6.
Midwestern claimed victories at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles as
Lauren Pineda and
Lindsay Nochowicz rolled to an 8-1 win over Malisa Vatanadilok and Maria Batchinsky at No. 2 while Schorlemmer and Boykin teamed for an 8-2 result over Zuminik and Dedic at No. 3.
The Mustangs play a doubleheader against St. Mary's (Texas) and Texas-Permian Basin Saturday in San Antonio. First service is set for 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
