Iowa State pulls away from Mustangs in second half

AMES, Iowa –
Iowa State opened the second half on a 21-0 run and shot 55.9 percent in the period to pull away from Midwestern State with a 79-36 exhibition win Thursday evening at Hilton Coliseum.

Midwestern State hung close with the Cyclones through the first 20 minutes of play, going into the locker room with a 32-24 deficit.

In the first quarter, the Mustangs kept the Cyclones in check, not allowing the home team to open up more than a four-point advantage with ISU holding a 17-14 lead after the opening quarter. After ISU jumped out to a 6-2 lead to begin the game, sophomore guard Whitney Taylor and freshman forward Kendriana Washington helped the Mustangs take a 7-6 lead with 4:26 to play in the quarter.

Sophomore guard Krishawn Crockett scored eight of the Mustangs' 10 points in the second quarter, helping the squad erase a double-digit deficit with a couple of treys to bring the Maroon and Gold back within five.  Midwestern State held the Cyclones without a field goal the final 5:44 to trail by eight at the break.

In the second half, the Mustangs went scoreless for most of the third quarter until Taylor recorded MSU's first basket of the half at the 1:34 mark. The Cyclones outscored the Mustangs 26-5 in the quarter to take a 58-29 lead through three.

ISU was dominant again in the final quarter, allowing just one MSU bucket through the first half of the period to go on to record the 79-36 victory.

Crockett recorded a team-high 13 points, shooting 3-of-6 from behind the arc, along with four rebounds. Taylor added seven points while Washington totaled six points and four boards.

Iowa State finished with a 45.3 shooting percentage while MSU was held to a 24.5 percent clip. ISU scored 35 points off 23 Mustangs turnovers while the Cyclones committed just six miscues on the night.

Freshman guard Bridget Carleton led the Cyclones with 19 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the floor.

Midwestern State hosts the fifth annual Ashbrook Classic to open the 2015-16 season, Nov. 13-14, at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Mustangs tipoff against Rogers State in the season opener Friday, Nov. 13 at 8 p.m.
