DENTON, Texas – Midwestern State was held to 23.6 shooting and its lowest scoring total since the 2007-08 season in a 60-36 loss to Colorado State-Pueblo Saturday afternoon in the Marriott Champions Circle Pioneer Premiere at Kitty Magee Arena.
Colorado State-Pueblo (2-1) shot 43.5 percent (27-of-62) and out-rebounded the Mustangs 47-36 while adding six rejections on the day.
Midwestern State's (1-3) 19 turnovers and 23.6 shooting percentage (13-of-55) from the floor made for the program's fewest points since scoring 35 against Northeastern State on Jan. 3, 2008.
Sophomore guard
Krishawn Crockett recorded a team-high 15 points and four boards while freshman forward
McKenna Villegas added six points and a team-best 10 rebounds, six coming on the offensive end. Freshman forward Kendriana Washington added nine boards.
Both teams traded baskets in the opening minutes as a three-pointer from freshman guard
Alyssa Jones put the Mustangs ahead 8-6 with 2:29 to play in the first quarter. However, the MSU lead was short-lived as CSU-Pueblo put together a 6-0 run to close out the quarter, receiving eight of its 12 points from junior post Angie Moore for a 12-8 first quarter lead.
The ThunderWolves pushed their run to 11, taking a 17-8 advantage on the Mustangs two minutes into the second quarter before sophomore guard
Krishawn Crockett connected on her second three-pointer of the afternoon to cut the CSU-Pueblo lead to six.
CSU-Pueblo claimed a 15-point lead late in the first half, taking a 28-13 advantage into the break after shooting 50 percent (13-of-26) from the floor and holding the Mustangs to 18.5 percent (5-of-27).
The ThunderWolves took a 25-point lead midway through the third quarter until Midwestern ended their drought with a 6-0 run with four points coming from Crockett.
The Mustangs were unable to pull any closer in the fourth quarter with CSU-Pueblo stretching its lead to as much as 29 before recording the 60-36 win.
Midwestern State wraps up the Marriott Champions Circle Pioneer Premiere tomorrow at 2 p.m. against Colorado Christian.
