DENTON, Texas – For the second-straight game, Midwestern State struggled on the offensive end as Colorado Christian limited the Mustangs to a 23.1 shooting percentage (9-of-39) and its lowest scoring total in program history in a 50-27 defeat Sunday afternoon at the Marriott Champions Circle Pioneer Premiere.
While being held to just five points in the first quarter, the Midwestern State (1-4) defense kept the Mustangs in the contest early in holding Colorado Christian (3-1) to 12 first quarter points.
The score remained 12-5 for 5:44 into the second period before freshman guard Ashley Nelson broke the scoring drought for the Lady Cougars at the 4:16 mark. The Mustangs field goal drought lasted over 13 minutes into the third quarter before a jumper in the paint by freshman post
McKenna Villegas made it a 21-10 game 30 seconds into the second half.
Midwestern State crept within eight after a three-pointer from freshman forward Kendriana Washington, who led the Mustangs with nine points on 3-of-5 shooting. However, the Lady Cougars ended the period on a 16-5 run to take a 37-18 advantage after three.
Villegas ended a nine-plus minute MSU drought with a layup with 4:32 to play before sophomore guard
Kristin Rydell scored five of Midwestern's final seven points.
The Mustangs committed 26 turnovers to add to their frustration Sunday with the Lady Cougars totaling 15 steals.
CCU finished with a 39.6 shooting percentage (19-of-48) and was led by junior forward Claire Paxton with 11 points.
