Mustangs compete for Final Four berth at home this weekend

FOR STARTERS
Following a 4-2 win over Colorado Mesa in the NCAA Second Round, top-seeded Midwestern State will look to punch its third ticket to the Final Four in program history this weekend as hosts of the Super Region Four Tournament at MSU Soccer Field.

The Mustangs will play host to No. 2 seed Colorado Mines in the South Central Region final Friday at 6:30 p.m. The match will follow the West Region final, which will begin Friday at 4 p.m. between No. 1 Cal Poly Pomona and No. 3 Cal State Dominguez Hills.
 
The quarterfinal round will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. between the two regional champions at MSU Soccer Field.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Trailing for just the third time this season, the Mustangs went into halftime Sunday with a 2-1 deficit to Colorado Mesa. A strike from senior defender Ben Clarvis gave MSU an early 1-0 lead before the Mavericks answered with back-to-back goals in the next 10 minutes for a 2-1 advantage.
 
Midwestern State netted the equalizer in the 53rd minute thanks to junior midfielder Flavio Guzman before climbing back in front in the 66th minute with a goal by junior midfielder Leon Taylor. Sophomore forward Laurence Chamberlain capped off the MSU scoring spurt with 15 minutes to play for a 4-2 final.
 
SCOUTING THE OREDIGGERS
– Colorado Mines is making its sixth NCAA Tournament appearance, coming in as the No. 2 seed in the South Central Region and joining Midwestern State as two of just three teams in NCAA Division II (Pfeiffer) that are undefeated this season (17-0-3)
– The Orediggers sport one of the top offenses in the country, averaging 2.75 goals per game for 13th
– Mines is third in the country with 21.0 shots and fifth with 9.4 shots on goal per game
–The Mines defense has also been strong, ranking eighth with a 0.62 goals against average and 13th with a 0.5 shutout percentage
– Senior midfielder Richard Garvey leads the Orediggers with 12 goals this season while sophomore midfielder Nikolaus Grotz has a team-high 14 assists and 32 points
– Junior goalkeeper Collin Hall ranks fifth nationally with a .865 save percentage and eighth with a .586 goals against average
– Head coach Frank Kohlenstein is in his 18th season at Mines with a career record of 220-113-35

INSIDE THE SERIES
– Midwestern State is 7-4 versus Colorado Mines since the first meeting between the two programs in 2001
– Friday's matchup will be the third between the teams in the NCAA Tournament with MSU winning both of the previous contests in Wichita Falls
– The last meeting occurred Nov. 17, 2013 when the Mustangs handed the Orediggers a 1-0 defeat in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament
– The Mustangs also defeated Mines in their 2010 NCAA Final Four run with a 3-1 win in the regional final on Nov. 14
– Midwestern is 4-0 against the Orediggers in matches played at MSU Soccer Field
 
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS
– Cal Poly Pomona is competing in its second NCAA Tournament, carrying a 14-2-3 record into the NCAA Third Round
– The Broncos claimed a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament Championship with a 2-0 win over Stanislaus State (Calif.) to earn the No. 1 seed in the West Region
– CPP posted a 1-0 win over conference foe Cal State Los Angeles in the NCAA Second Round last weekend and will continue to face CCAA opponents this weekend with a matchup against Cal State Dominguez Hills (the two teams played to a 2-2 draw back on Sept. 25 in Pomona)
– Senior forward Christian Gonzalez Diaz leads the Broncos offense with 11 goals, five assists and 27 points this season
– Senior midfielder Alexander Turkson has also been a go-to player for the Broncos in the attacking third, totaling seven goals with a team-best three game winners on the year
– Senior goalkeeper Fernando Pablo Quevedo ranks 15th in the nation with a .702 goals against average to help the Broncos come in 28th nationally with a 0.42 shutout percentage
– Head coach Yossi Raz is in his third season at CPP with a 38-10-9 record
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
– If Midwestern State and Cal Poly Pomona both claim regional titles, Sunday's NCAA Quarterfinal will be the first meeting between the two teams
 
SCOUTING THE TOROS
– Cal State Dominguez Hills is making its 13th postseason appearance with two national titles to its name
– The Toros sport a 15-2-4 record as the No. 3 seed in the West Region, defeating No. 6 seed Fresno Pacific (Calif.) and No. 2 seed Seattle Pacific (Wash.) last weekend in Seattle
– The Toros have recorded 48 goals and 52 assists to rank 19th and fifth in the nation, respectively
– Senior forward Pedro Velasquez leads CSUDH with 11 goals and 26 points this season
– The Toros have had six players record at least four assists with senior defender Jaime Rios and junior defender Gabriel Rivera leading the team with five apiece
– Sophomore goalkeeper Chase Gentry holds a .909 goals against average for 34th in the country
– Head coach Joe Flanagan is in his 22nd season at CSUDH with a 313-118-40 career record
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
– Midwestern State is 0-1 against Cal State Dominguez Hills with the Toros eliminating the Mustangs in the NCAA Quarterfinals, 2-1, during their NCAA title run on Nov. 21, 2008 in Carson, Calif.
 
MSU IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
– Midwestern State is making its 11th NCAA Tournament appearance and ninth showing in the last 10 seasons in 2015, sporting a 13-8-3 postseason record
– MSU qualified for its first NCAA Tournament in 2002, advancing to the national quarterfinals in 2002 and 2003

 UNBEATEN STREAKS

– Dating back to the 1979 season, Midwestern State has won 85 percent of its matches at MSU Soccer Field with a record of 324-48-27
– The Mustangs have recorded eight undefeated seasons with three perfect slates (1991, 2008, 2010) in that span
– MSU posted a program-best 15 home wins in 1995 while hosting the NAIA sectional and regional playoffs
– From Nov. 17, 2007 to Sept. 9, 2012, the Mustangs posted a school record 44-match unbeaten streak at MSU Soccer Field

MSU NO. 2 IN FINAL NSCAA REGULAR SEASON POLL
– Midwestern State made its sixth appearance at No. 2 this season in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II Top 25 regular season poll released Tuesday, Nov. 10
– The Mustangs have appeared in the top five in the national rankings since the second week of the season when they climbed from ninth to fifth

MUSTANGS MAKE APPEARANCE AT NO. 1
– For just the fifth time in program history, the Midwestern State made an appearance at No. 1 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II Top 25 Poll on Oct. 6
– The Mustangs last appeared at the top of the national poll near the end of the 2008 season with three-straight weeks (Oct. 21-Nov. 4) at No. 1
– Midwestern State first took over the No. 1 spot back on Sept. 24, 1984 after opening the season 5-0-0 following a 9-2 win over TCU
 
MSU RALLIES FOR SECOND TOP-10 WIN
– The Mustangs took down their second top-10 opponent of the season on Oct. 8 in Wichita Falls, earning a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over No. 6 St. Edward's
– Midwestern State also recorded a 4-1 win over then-No. 4 Colorado Mesa in the second match of the season on Sept. 6 at MSU Soccer Field
– Facing the nation's top defense, the Mustangs struck early with a goal from senior midfielder Juan Farres in the 16th minute, but the Hilltoppers would eventually go on top with two second half goals for a 2-1 advantage with just over 20 minutes to play
– Midwestern State kept attacking the St. Edward's defense, recording the equalizer in the 78th minute with a score from junior midfielder Gabriel Cavalcante
– With 3:30 remaining in regulation, junior midfielder Flavio Guzman put the Mustangs ahead with a strike from inside the box off a pass from senior forward Albert Rodriguez to hand the Hilltoppers their first defeat of the season
 
BACK-TO-BACK HAT TRICKS
– Senior forward Albert Rodriguez recorded Midwestern State's first hat trick of the 2015 season in a 7-0 win over Dallas Baptist on Oct. 17, netting the first, second and fifth goals for MSU in the match
– In the next match against Texas A&M International on Oct. 22, junior midfielder Flavio Guzman tallied his first hat trick in a 4-1 win over the Dustdevils
– The duo became the 13th and 14th Mustangs to record a hat trick dating back to 2000
– In that span, Midwestern State has recorded hat tricks in back-to-back matches just once when Jimmy Krueger netted a hat trick in the 2005 season opener against St. Edward's on Aug. 26 before Keegan Hudson recorded the second one against Colorado State-Pueblo on Sept. 2
– Midwestern State has also had two players post hat tricks in the same match when Craig Sutherland and Bryan Sajjadi each tallied one against Missouri Southern on Oct. 31, 2008
 
ELDER BECOMES ALL-TIME WINNINGEST COACH IN PROGRAM HISTORY
– Following the win over Southern Nazarene on Sept. 10, Midwestern State head coach Doug Elder became the all-time winningest coach in program history with his 222nd win
– Elder passed his former coach Howard Patterson, who finished with a 221-85-20 record (.709) in 17 seasons (1973-89) at Midwestern
– Now in his 16th season at MSU, Elder holds a career record of 236-51-29 (.793)
– Elder's career winning percentage of .793 currently ranks first among active NCAA Division II coaches
