SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Midwestern State volleyball team hung with one of the nation's top offenses in sets two and three before Angelo State pulled out a 3-0 sweep (25-10, 25-21, 25-21) Friday evening at the Junell Center.
It was a rough beginning for the Mustangs (5-15, 0-6 LSC), dropping the opening set 25-10 as the Rambelles hit .359 with just three attacking errors. After a service ace by freshman libero
Matti Dix to bring the score to 3-2 ASU, the Rambelles mounted a 10-2 run to force a Midwestern State timeout. ASU kept pounding away throughout the remainder of the set as the home team took a 25-10 win.
ASU (16-4, 5-1 LSC) took a 10-2 lead to begin the second frame before a kill by sophomore outside hitter
Meghan Bettis ended the run and sparked the Mustangs to begin one of their own. Trailing 12-5, freshman middle blocker
Olivia Schiffner helped Midwestern pull within three with a kill before teaming up with freshman setter
Hayden Blair and senior outside hitter
Hunter Porter for blocks to make it 12-9 ASU.
With the Rambelles holding a 20-16 advantage, two ASU attack errors sandwiched around a kill from freshman middle blocker
Kiley Beaver brought the Mustangs within one at 20-19 and forced the Rambelles to call a timeout. Out of the break, ASU reeled off three points to take control of the set and claim a 25-21 win.
The Mustangs put together a strong start to the third set, going up 7-2 with kills from Beaver, Bettis and sophomore middle blocker
Addison Semer. However, the Rambelles answered with a 3-0 spurt to stay within striking distance after a block by sophomore outside hitter Brianna Sotello and junior outside hitter Alyssa Orr.
Midwestern State stretched its lead to 14-9 following an ASU attack error but the Rambelles kept answering every MSU run as a kill by sophomore right side hitter Abbie Lynn made it a one-point contest at 16-15. A 4-0 run by the Rambelles gave them their first lead of the set since 1-0 to force the Mustangs to call timeout trailing 19-17. A hitting error by ASU brought Midwestern within two late before back-to-back kills from junior outside hitter Mallory Blauser gave the Rambelles the 3-0 sweep with another 25-21 win.
Beaver led the Mustangs with seven kills while Semer and Bettis each tallied six in the loss. Defensively, Dix recorded her third-straight 20-plus dig performance to lead all players with 23 on the night.
Blauser led the Rambelles with 13 kills while Sotello recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 18 digs.
Midwestern State faces Tarleton State tomorrow in a 2 p.m. match at Wisdom Volleyball Gym in Stephenville.
