WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 5 Angelo State limited the Midwestern State women's soccer team's attacking game Friday night at MSU Soccer Field as the Rambelles allowed just three shots on goal in a 2-0 victory that snapped the Mustangs' three-match win streak.
"I think that we played well," said head coach
Damian Clarke. "We grew a lot today as far as figuring out what it's really like to play against a legitimate top-10 team. I think we showed for long periods of time that we're a good team. We're difficult for teams to play against. There has to be more growth. Hats off to an excellent team."
Midwestern State (6-3-2, 2-2-1 LSC) put pressure on the Rambelles defense early, earning a corner kick just over a minute into the contest. The Mustangs recorded their first shot attempt in the second minute as junior forward
Aly Wade sent a shot from the middle of the box just high of the goal.
However, just three minutes later Angelo State (10-1-1, 4-1-0 LSC) struck as junior midfielder Demi Tsambasis found the net off a free kick
from the right wing by redshirt junior defender Shay Williams to give the Rambelles an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of play. Tsambasis would later add her second score of the match in the final minute, collecting a loose ball in the box off senior forward Sierra Anderson's blocked shot to make it a final 2-0 score.
While being limited to six shots on the evening, the Mustangs put together several scoring opportunities. In the 26th minute, senior midfielder
Morgan Hannon had a header hit the crossbar off a corner kick from Wade to keep Midwestern State from recording the equalizer.
Early in the second period, junior forward
Nicole Coetzer sent a rocket towards senior goalkeeper Shantel Wittke but the veteran was able to record the save as she reached up near the crossbar to swat the ball away.
"When we get to the end lines, we have to be a little bit more clinical," Clarke said. "It's picking a pass, not just crossing. I thought today we had a hard time just relaxing enough to pick a pass. That's goes back to the team we played against. They put enough pressure on you to make those situations more difficult."
Angelo State totaled nine shots with seven being placed on target. Anderson led the Rambelles with four shots with two on goal.
For Midwestern State, Wade recorded a team-high three shots with two on goal.
Wittke (10-1-1) earned the win for the Rambelles with three saves while sophomore goalkeeper
Courtney Burnette (6-3-2) took the loss with two goals against and five saves for the Mustangs.
Midwestern State will return to action Friday when the Mustangs travel to Canyon to face West Texas A&M in a 7 p.m. kickoff.
