CANYON, Texas – Sophomore forward
Destinee Williamson lifted the Midwestern State women's soccer team to a 1-1 draw against West Texas A&M with a goal in the 82nd minute to deny the Lady Buffs a third-straight win Friday evening at The Pitch.
With just over eight minutes to play in regulation, junior forward
Aly Wade set up for a free kick on the left side of the pitch a few yards away from the box. Wade's kick landed in the middle of the box before Williamson headed the ball in for her fifth goal of the season to even the match at 1-1.
West Texas A&M (6-6-1, 3-2-1 LSC) struck first in the 64th minute as a free kick by junior midfielder Karyn Forbes found senior midfielder Haley Girard in the middle of the box before Girard tallied a header goal to put the Lady Buffs out in front at 1-0.
Following Williamson's goal, WT was unable to fire a shot on target in the final 28:11. The Mustangs placed four on goal, but were unable to get one past WT freshman goalkeeper Courtney Dippel (3-4-1).
Midwestern State (6-3-3, 2-2-2 LSC) finished with a 15-9 advantage in shots, placing 11 of those on target compared to just five for WT.
It was a quiet first half offensively as both teams recorded just two shots on goal in the opening period.
"I thought we were slow to come out in the first half, similar to the first game (against West Texas A&M)," said head coach
Damian Clarke. "I thought we figured it out the last 15 minutes of the first half and played well. In the second half, we were much better. We limited opportunities, but our kids had to fight. We earned a point on the road and we needed that. We walked off the field with our heads held high."
Williamson led the Mustangs with four shots, placing all four attempts on goal, while Wade and junior forward
Nicole Coetzer added three shots apiece.
In goal, sophomore goalkeeper
Courtney Burnette (6-3-3) collected four saves while allowing the one goal in all 110 minutes of action.
Girard led WT with three shots while five different Lady Buffs finished with one shot on goal for the evening.
"It's difficult to get points in this conference on the road," Clarke said. "We have a chance to put ourselves in a good position if we take care of business on Sunday. We did well to get one off of West Texas today. Our older players played well.
Kayla Cheesman came on and did great. It was good to see the work she has put in pay off."
Midwestern State continues its road trip Sunday with a 2 p.m. (CT) kickoff against Eastern New Mexico in Portales.
