PORTALES, N.M. – The Midwestern State volleyball team let an early lead slip away Saturday afternoon as the Mustangs fell 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-17) to Eastern New Mexico at Greyhound Arena.

Midwestern State (5-18, 0-9 LSC) claimed a 1-0 lead following a 25-22 opening set win where the Mustangs hit .357. After a tight set in the early going, the Mustangs began to pull away as a block from freshman setter Hayden Blair and freshman middle blocker Olivia Schiffner put the visitors up 14-11 to force an ENMU timeout.

A Schiffner kill began a 6-1 run for Midwestern with kills also coming from sophomore middle blocker Addison Semer and senior outside hitter Hunter Porter to bring the MSU lead to 20-13.

With the Mustangs holding a 23-16 advantage, the Greyhounds reeled off five-straight points before an ENMU service error and kill from Semer capped off a 25-22 win.

The Greyhounds (9-11, 3-6 LSC) evened the match at 1-1 heading into halftime. The Mustangs went on top early once again in the second set, breaking a 7-7 frame to move in front at 14-8 after a block by Blair and Beaver.

ENMU began to chip away at the Mustangs lead late in the set as back-to-back attack errors by Midwestern evened the set at 20-all. After the Mustangs took a 22-21 advantage, the Greyhounds put together a 4-0 spurt with kills from junior right side hitter Lauren Frye and freshman middle blocker Amanda Dietz for a 25-22 win.

Out of the break, ENMU carried momentum from an early 12-5 advantage to take a 25-16 third set win and 2-1 lead in the match.

In the final frame, the Greyhounds jumped out in front at 5-1 before stretching their lead out late in a 25-17 set win to complete the comeback.

Schiffner paced the Mustangs with 12 kills while Beaver added 10 kills on a team-best .348 clip. Semer also reached double figures in kills with 10.
