Mustangs look to climb LSC standings with two crucial contests

FOR STARTERS
Following a four-match home stand, Midwestern State is back on the road this weekend as the Mustangs face West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico in two crucial Lone Star Conference meetings.
 
Currently tied for fourth in the LSC with seven points, the Mustangs will first take on second place West Texas A&M in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff Friday in Canyon before traveling to Portales to play Eastern New Mexico in a 2 p.m. (CT) contest Saturday.
 
Midwestern State went 1-1-0 at home last week, earning a 1-0 overtime victory over CSU-Pueblo in non-conference action before a 2-0 defeat to No. 5 Angelo State in LSC play. Against the ThunderWolves, senior midfielder Morgan Hannon delivered the golden goal in the 100th minute to lift the Mustangs to their first overtime win since Oct. 6, 2013 in a 3-2 victory over No. 24 Texas A&M-Commerce.

SCOUTING THE LADY BUFFS
– West Texas A&M is currently 6-6-0 on the season with a 3-2-0 mark in the LSC
– The Lady Buffs are a perfect 4-0-0 at The Pitch with wins over Southwestern Oklahoma State, Texas A&M International, Texas Woman's and Texas A&M-Commerce
– WT moved into second place in the LSC following wins over Texas Woman's and Texas A&M-Commerce last weekend
– Freshman midfielder Khadidra Debesette is the top offensive producer for the Lady Buffs with seven goals and 15 points this season
– Debesette is 38th nationally with 0.78 goals per game and 55th with 1.67 points per game
– Freshman starting goalkeeper Courtney Dippel was injured in the first half against Midwestern State on Oct. 4 and has not returned to the starting lineup
– Sophomore goalkeeper McKynzie Zick has come off the bench for a 3-0-0 record this season, allowing just one goal in 270 minutes for a 0.33 goals against average and a .938 save percentage
– Head coach Chad Webb is in his sixth season leading the Lady Buffs program, holding a 49-49-11 record at WT

INSIDE THE SERIES
– Midwestern State is 18-16-2 against West Texas A&M in the all-time series
– The Lady Buffs are 12-3-1 against the Mustangs in Canyon
– The Mustangs earned a 3-1 win over WT on Oct. 4 at MSU Soccer Field, netting three second half goals
– Last season, WT earned a 2-1 victory in Canyon before the Mustangs answered with a 2-1 win at MSU Soccer Field
– The Mustangs last picked up a win at WT in the 2013 season with a 1-0 victory over the Lady Buffs

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS
– Eastern New Mexico comes in with a 4-8-1 record and 0-5-0 mark in the LSC
– The Greyhounds have been outscored 9-2 in conference action
– ENMU has since snapped a four-match losing streak with a 3-0 win over UT-Permian Basin earlier this week
– Graduate forward Melissa Carnero and sophomore midfielder Morgan Fairbanks have each totaled three goals this season with Carnero leading the Greyhounds with eight points
– Senior goalkeeper Cristina Escobedo has made seven starts in nine appearances for ENMU, allowing 10 goals in 715 minutes for a 1.26 goals against average
– Sophomore goalkeeper Karissa Stinson has totaled 489 minutes in goal, allowing seven scores for a 1.29 goals against average
– Head coach Omar Morales is in his second season with the Greyhounds, leading the squad to a 9-8-0 record and a third-place finish in the LSC in 2014
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
– Midwestern State holds an 11-4-2 record in the all-time series against Eastern New Mexico following a 2-0 shutout over the Greyhounds on Oct. 2 at MSU Soccer Field
– The Mustangs split with the Greyhounds last season with a 3-1 win in Portales and a 1-0 loss in Wichita Falls
– Midwestern State is 5-2-0 against ENMU in Portales, winning the last two matches by a combined score of 5-1
 
MUSTANGS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
– After ranking 59th with a .842 goals against average in 2014, the Mustangs defense has picked up right where they left off last season
– The Mustangs are 27th nationally with a .545 shutout percentage and 36th with a .693 goals against average after allowing just eight goals through 11 matches
– The goalkeeping duo of sophomore Courtney Burnette and redshirt freshman Brooke Bottensek have combined for a .857 save percentage for 31st in the country
 
BURNETTE COLLECTING HONORS
– After being named the Lone Star Conference Goalkeeper of the Year a season ago, Burnette continues to rack up the awards in her sophomore campaign
– The Irving native was selected as the LSC Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year and was tabbed the LSC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 16 after helping the Mountaineers to a 1-0-1 week that included a 1-0 shutout of No. 13 UC-Colorado Springs
– Burnette currently ranks 37th in the nation with a .706 goals against average and 39th with a .852 save percentage
 
MUSTANGS RACK UP SIXTH SHUTOUT 
– It's no secret the Mustangs defense has been one of the strongest in the LSC and in the nation the past couple of seasons
– In a 1-0 overtime victory over CSU-Pueblo last Wednesday, the Mustangs recorded their sixth shutout of the season to match their total from 2014
– The Mustangs broke a 13-year school record in 2009 with 11 shutouts on the season
– The Mustangs' 0.69 goals against average this season currently ranks second in the program record books while their save percentage of .857 comes in eighth
 
MUSTANGS USING BALANCED OFFENSIVE ATTACK
– Sophomore forward Destinee Williamson has a team-best four goals and eight points this season to lead the Mustangs offense
– However, Midwestern State has received contributions from several players on the offensive side of the ball with seven different goal scorers and 15 that have tallied points this season
– Senior midfielder Morgan Hannon and junior forward Aly Wade have joined Williamson in leading the Mustangs, each recording three goals on the season

MIDWESTERN KNOCKS OFF NO. 13 MOUNTAIN LIONS
– In their first road match of the 2015 season, the Mustangs shutout No. 13 UC-Colorado Springs, 1-0
– Senior midfielder Morgan Hannon delivered the game winner for Midwestern, converting a penalty kick in the 63rd minute
– The win over UCCS was the first victory over a nationally-ranked opponent since the 2013 season when the Mustangs took down No. 24 Texas A&M-Commerce on the road
 
CLARKE BEGINS YEAR NO. 2
– In his first season at Midwestern, head coach Damian Clarke led the Mustangs to an 8-6-5 overall record and a fourth-place finish in the Lone Star Conference with a 3-5-2 mark
– In seven seasons at Fort Lewis (Colo.), Clarke compiled a 106-31-17 record with five NCAA Tournament appearances
– Now in his ninth season as a head coach, Clarke holds a career mark of 120-40-24 with a winning percentage of .717 that ranks 12th in NCAA Division II
 
MUSTANGS PICKED THIRD IN LSC
– Midwestern totaled 48 points for third in the Lone Star Conference Preseason Poll behind preseason favorite Angelo State (82) and Texas A&M-Commerce (80)
– The Mustangs return eight starters off last year's squad including 2014 All-LSC selections Morgan Hannon, Alex Edwards, Liz Navarette, Courtney Burnette and Destinee Williamson

– Midwestern State makes its final regular season road trip next weekend with contests at Angelo State and St. Mary's (Texas)
