Mustangs roll to 6-0, beat West Texas A&M 24-17

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Vincent Johnson rushed for a season-high 190 yards and two touchdowns to lead 12th-ranked Midwestern State to a 24-17 win over rival West Texas A&M Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.

The Mustangs improved to 6-0 for the first time since 2011 and will face No. 11-ranked Humboldt State (Calif.) next Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.

Johnson delivered the 11th-best rushing game in MSU program history going for the most yards since Chancey Harris ran for 232 against West Georgia on Nov. 10, 2012.

The true freshman from Lubbock Monterrey High put the game away with an 84-yard dash for a score with 9:21 to play to give MSU a 24-10 lead with 9:21 to play. It was the sixth longest run in school history and the longest since Jimmy Pipkin's 89-yard dash in 2012.

Johnson got the Mustangs going with a 9-yard TD run just three minutes into the game before Don Jerry converted a 6-yard touchdown after senior defensive lineman Harold Wills stripped WT running back Geremy Aldridge-Mitchell of the ball at the Buffs' 6-yard line with under two minutes to play.

It was part of a career game for Wills, who finished with 11 tackles including three stops for loss with a pair of sacks while forcing two fumbles.

MSU junior Quade Coward threw for 182 yards on 13-of-22 passing while running for 52 yards on eight carries in his second collegiate start at the signal caller, but threw his second pick six in the last two weeks when Will Tolliver made a 31-yard return for a score at the start of the second half to pull West Texas to within 14-10.

The Buffs worked for 378 yards of total offense behind the efforts of Aldridge-Mitchell who finished with 189 yards on 40 carries.

The Mustangs grounded out 271 rushing yards on the way to a total of 453.

West Texas A&M dipped to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in Lone Star Conference play.
