WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State leaned on its starters to deliver one of the biggest regular season wins in program history Wednesday night as the Mustangs rolled to a 77-64 win over No. 3-ranked West Texas A&M at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Â
All five starters scored in double figures as MSU defeated its highest rank opponent since the Mustangs made the move to NCAA Division II in 1997.
Â
MSU also matched the second longest winning streak in program history by claiming their 11th straight victory to move to 12-1 on the season while going to 3-0 in league play.
Â
Midwestern broke open a close game by scoring the first six points of the second half punctuated by a short jumper by
Shambreka Jones to grab a 40-31 lead with 17:18 to play.
Â
West Texas A&M scratched back to within four points just minutes later before the Mustangs strung together another 6-0 run as
Janae McJunkins, who had eight points off of the bench, ignited the spurt with a follow layup before
Andrea Carter connected on successive field goals to push the lead to 58-44 with 8:03 to go.
Â
Carter connected on six of her nine shots from the field to finish with a team-high 17 points while pulling down nine rebounds to pace the Mustangs, but she had plenty of help.
Â
Senior guard
Lisa Hampton knocked down three 3-pointers to log 13 points, while fellow senior
Shatoia Gober chipped in 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Â
Shambreka Jones delivered her fifth consecutive double-figure effort with 11 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots while senior guard
Dianna Jones added 10 points and four assists.
Â
West Texas A&M sophomore Sasha Watson poured in 23 points to pace the Lady Buffs, who dropped to 9-2 and 0-1. Seniors Chontiquah White and Haylee Oliver added 11 points each.
Â
Midwestern State needs four more wins to match the school's longest winning streak of 15 set from Jan. 5-Feb. 14, 1994. MSU also logged 11 consecutive during the 1979-80 and 2012-13 seasons.
Â
The Mustangs take on Eastern New Mexico Sunday afternoon in Portales. Tipoff at Greyhound Arena is set for 3 p.m. (Central Time).
