Mustangs efficiently dispatch Texas A&M-Kingsville, 66-53

KINGSVILLE, Texas — Midwestern State placed three players in double figures on the way to a 66-53 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday night at Steinke Center.

Seniors Andrea Carter, Shatoia Gober and Dianna Jones delivered efficient scoring nights combining for 41 points as the Mustangs improve to 15-3 overall while moving to 6-2 in Lone Star Conference play.

"It's been a rough month, but I wouldn't complain about our schedule," MSU coach Noel Johnson said. "I also can't complain about losing the games we did playing nine games this month. We know we were the better team and both games and we can only grow from it."

Texas A&M-Kingsville continued its struggle by falling to 0-17 on the season. The Javelinas are one of just three winless teams remaining in NCAA Division II.

Carter connected on 6-of-8 shots while going 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. The Angleton native added seven rebounds and seven steals to key a strong MSU defensive effort as the Mustangs limited the Javelinas to a 39.1-percent shooting night.

"This is Andrea's area of the state when we come back to South Texas," Johnson said. "She delivered a strong performance and played a key role for us offensively and defensively. We she starts hitting those short jumpers, she becomes very difficult to guard."

Jones continued to make the most of her shots hitting on 3-of-4 from the field and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line to finish with 13 points while narrowly missing out on a double-double with nine assists.

"She could have easily had two or three more assists and was doing a great job of play making for us," Johnson said. "She has that special connection with Shatoia (Gober) and knows to find her on the baseline."

Gober worked that baseline for a 5-of-7 shooting night to pile up 13 points and six rebounds.

Senior guard Lisa Hampton buried three 3-pointers to chip in nine points while moving into a tie for second place on MSU's all-time made 3-point field goals list with Kristen Ramsey (2000-04) with 125.

Rudy Robertson scored 13 points to lead the Javelinas.

Midwestern State takes on Cameron Saturday afternoon in Lawton. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
