WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The MSU Mustangs bounced back from a two-game losing streak to defeat the Angelo State Rambelles 69-61 on Wednesday night.
The Mustangs (14-3, 5-2) received a gift in returning starting guard
Dianna Jones who missed the last contest due to injury. Jones picked up where she left off, scoring 14 points on 4-5 shooting.
MSU also got another double-double from senior forward
Andrea Carter. Carter tallied 14 points and 14 rebounds to set the tone for the night.
The first 19 minutes of the game were a back-and-forth affair, seeing 6 tie scores in the first half. Eventually Midwestern State used a 10-1 run over a five minute span to build a 9 point lead with 49 seconds remaining in the half.
No single Mustang stood out offensively in the first half, as head coach
Noel Johnson's team was led by
Janae McJunkins with 5 points at the break.
Angelo State turned the tables and used a 10-4 run to tie the game again with 16:33 to play. The score was tied for the last time at 38 apiece with 14:59 left in the game.
Dianna Jones and
Andrea Carter stepped up for MSU, scoring 22 of their 28 points in the second half. The Mustangs defense was well represented with
Shambreka Jones swatting 5 Rambelle shots for the game. The five blocks is Shambreka's second best single-game block total behind a 7 block performance against Texas A&M-Commerce on February 8, 2014.
MSU would build as much as a twelve point lead against Angelo State in the second half, relying on timely free throws to keep the pesky Rambelles at a safe distance. The Mustangs connected on 26-36 attempts from the line on the night.
Next up for Midwestern State is a trip to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday, January 24. The Javelina's are winless on the season with an 0-16 record. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. from the Steinke Center in Kingsville, Texas.
