WICHITA FALLS, Texas - A late comeback effort wasn't enough for the Mustangs as the Texas Women's Pioneers squeaked out a 57-55 win at Ligon Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.

The Mustangs (13-3, 4-2) now have their first 2 game losing streak of the season following the 61-56 loss at Tarleton State on January 14. MSU was missing starting point guard Dianna Jones due to an injury suffered at Tarleton State.

MSU and the Pioneers traded shots throughout the first 8 minutes of the game. A TWU guard Kanesha Saygo layup gave the Pioneers a 15-14 advantage with 11:24 to play in the first half. The Mustangs responded with an 11-1 run over the next 5:28 to secure their largest lead of the game at 25-16.

Texas Women's closed the first half with a run of their own, outscoring MSU 13-5 during the final 5:56 of the half.The Pioneers outrebounded the Mustangs 23-17 in the first half, as well as forcing 10 MSU turnovers. The Mustangs held on to a 30-29 lead at the break.

The second half saw TWU pick up where they left off, eventually taking a lead and building a 50-37 advantage with 7:42 to play.

Mustang senior forward Andrea Carter stepped up to lead an MSU comeback. Carter poured in 8 of her game-high 17 points in the final 5 minutes. Carter also dished an assist to Janae McJunkins for the final 3-pointer that trimmed the TWU lead to two.

Senior forward Shambreka Jones also had a terrific game in the losing effort, draining 13 points and grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds.

Midwestern State could not overcome the combination of poor shooting, just 29.3 percent, and a timely 5-of-6 free throws from TWU in the final 30 seconds.

MSU looks to recover quickly as they host the Angelo State Rambelles on Wednesday night, January 21, at Ligon Coliseum. The Rambelles enter the game on a 5-game losing streak of their own. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
