WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State let four match points get away and Arkansas Tech capitalized on the opportunity to the send the Mustangs to the loss column for the first time this season in five sets Saturday afternoon in the Hampton Inn-vitational at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak as Midwestern had claimed wins over Colorado State-Pueblo, Fort Lewis and Southwestern Oklahoma State earlier tournament to go to 3-1 on the season.
MSU returns to action Tuesday night on the road against Dallas Baptist in the Burg Center. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
The Mustangs seemed to be on a roll throughout much of the early stages against the Golden Suns taking the first set 25-22 and rolling to a 25-12 win the second set.
MSU held match points at 24-23, 25-24, 26-25 and 27-26 but was unable close out ATU until the Golden Suns got a pair of clutch kills by sophomore Kaylee Konsella to spark three-point run to extend the match by taking the set 29-27.
The teams fought their way through 20 ties and 13 lead changes in a hotly contested fourth set before Midwestern State committed three consecutive attacking errors to give the Golden Suns the fourth set, 25-22.
MSU rallied from a 7-3 deficit in the deciding set to knot the score at 11-11 and 14-14 , but ATU got a kill from senior Emily Todd and forced another attack error to close out the match.
Junior outside hitter
Nicole Marzik notched her third double-double of the weekend finishing with a match-high 18 kills to go along with 16 digs.
MSU middle blocker duo of senior
Kat Molloy (14 kills, 3 blocks) and sophomore
Sarah Garfield (12 kills, 1 error (.393)) closed out solid tournament performances, while freshman
Addison Semer added 10 kills of her own.
Senior libero
Casey Fletcher paced back row efforts with 29 digs, while sophomore setter
Sarah Rosinke recorded 50 set assists to go along with nine digs.
Konsella and Todd paced the Golden Suns' attack with 15 kills each, while freshman libero Madison Nagel had a match-high 31 digs.
Arkansas Tech improved to 2-2 on the season.
