DURANGO, Colo. -- Redshirt-freshman
Courtney Burnette scrambled for 12 saves to earn her first collegiate clean sheet to help Midwestern State battle No. 24-ranked Fort Lewis to a scoreless draw Saturday afternoon at Dirks Field.
The Mustangs come out of Colorado with two ties as they battled Colorado Mesa to a 2-2 stalemate in Thursday's season opener.
"The girls made a great deal of improvement from the first game to the second," MSU coach
Damian Clarke said. "We were able to keep our back eight together that as a unit. We were comfortable with the shots we allowed being at a distance. Courtney is improving with each game and was able to clean up the opportunities they were able to create."
Fort Lewis held an 28-13 edge in shots while placing 12 on frame, but the teams had an equal amount of dangerous opportunities.
MSU freshman striker
Destinee Williamson found the wood work with a shot off of the post in the 43rd minute which proved to be one of the best chances of the match for the Mustangs, who didn't place an official shot on goal until Williamson tested FLC goalkeeper Kodie Johnson in the 54th minute.
Sophomore forward
Nicole Coetzer put another shot on goal in the in the 88th minute, while sophomore
Alyssa Parkhill put a shot on frame in the closing seconds of regulation.
"We had numerous players who have started to come into their own," Clarke said. "
Katy Catney, Lizzie Navarette and
Morgan Hannon played very hard in the midfield. Katy was key to the linking of the units. I am looking forward to watching the team grow from here."
Fort Lewis outshot the Mustangs 6-1 in extra time, but was unable to sneak one past Burnette allowing MSU to earn a result.
Midwestern takes on Western State Colorado in its home opener Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Skyhawks moved to 1-0-1 on the season after claiming a 2-1 win over Texas Woman's on Thursday.
