Mustangs earn second straight scoreless draw

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State remains unbeaten through the first three matches of the season for just the fifth time in school after battling Western State Colorado to a scoreless draw Friday night at the MSU Soccer field.

It's also the second consecutive draw for MSU, who also took 24th-ranked Fort Lewis the full 110 minutes without a goal last weekend as the Mustangs moved to 0-0-3 on the season

"We're making progress and we haven't lost," MSU coach Damian Clarke said. "As soon as we get a win, we will start to roll."

Midwestern gets a quick turnaround as the Mustangs travel to take on Southwestern Oklahoma State Sunday afternoon in Weatherford. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

The progress is business as usual for Clarke's defense-first mentality which was led by the solid play of defenders Dakota Baze, Alexandria Edwards, Katie Huff and Haley Britton.

Add to the fact, redshirt-freshman Courtney Burnett made six more saves to up her season save percentage to .933 while posting her second consecutive clean sheet. She has not allowed a goal in her last 250 minutes between the posts.

"(Fort Lewis) set an NCAA record with eight ties the first year we implemented this system," Clarke said of his 2004 squad. "It is small steps. Our back four were fantastic tonight and this is the first game we've outshot the opponent and our three forwards are starting to look dangerous."

Junior Ashley Cottrell, sophomore Nicole Coetzer and freshman Destinee Williamson helped the Mustangs combine for 16 shots placing nine on frame while the defense held the Mountaineers to 13 shots with six falling on frame mostly from outside of the 18-yard box.

The Mustangs are unbeaten through three matches for the first time since the 2011 team was 2-0-1. MSU was also 3-0 in 2004 and 2010 and also 2-0-1 in 2007.

Western State Colorado goalkeeper Meghan Jedrzejewski made nine saves to earn her second shutout of the season.

The Mountaineers moved to 2-0-1.
