A man down, Mustangs battle St. Edward's to 1-1 draw

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 18 Midwestern State battled a man down over the final 26 minutes before settling for a 1-1 draw with St. Edward's Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.

"I really don't like ties. It's like you didn't even play," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "We wasted an opportunity at home to get a win, but it's hard to win with 10 guys."

That was the task at hand after junior Juan Farres drew a red card for dissension in the 63rd minute of a scoreless tie.

"I am disappointed in (Farres), he's got to be more disciplined than that," Elder said.

The Mustangs kept fighting as senior midfielder Andrew Power earned a penalty kick after he was taken down from behind in the box by Nate Coons in the 77th minute.

Power calmly beat SEU goalkeeper Kevin Leib to his right or his team leading ninth goal of the campaign. The Waterford, Ireland native has scored in three consecutive games and in seven of MSU's eight matches this season.

The Mustangs also stepped up the defensive effort while playing a man down not allowing a shot on goal until St. Edward's earned a penalty kick opportunity of its own in the 85th minute when MSU junior defender Javan Toledo nudged SEU's Haiden Stiles from behind on a through ball.

"That was Javan pushing a guy in the back. I think (the referee) had to call it because he called the one on our end. It wasn't a horrible foul, but it's a bad decision on our defense," Elder said. "We just had to make the guy beat us to score, but don't beat yourself. By giving up the foul there, we gave them the PK. We have to be smarter than that."

Andrew Fox converted the penalty with a blast to the upper right corner of the net for the equalizer to send the match to extra time.

"We've created some chances and now we have a few tough road games coming up," Elder said. "We have to win at their place. We need to figure some things out, but we're not desperate right now."

The Mustangs, who dropped to 6-1-1, hit the road to play Texas-Permian Basin Thursday night at the UTPB Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

St. Edward's moved to 5-2-1 on the season.
