WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State scored three goals in each half to claim its fourth consecutive win Tuesday night claiming a 6-1 result over Southern Nazarene at the MSU Soccer Field.
"It's good for us to be attacking as well as we are, but we need to defend better," MSU coach
Damian Clarke said. "We're always happy to win, but this wasn't one of our better performances."
The Mustangs improved to 4-0-3 on the season to extend their regular season unbeaten string to 12 matches. It's just the second the second time in program history that MSU has been unbeaten through seven games and the first time since 2009.
Still, Southern Nazarene gave MSU much to worry about as the Crimson Storm scored an early goal on a cross from Sheridan Williams to Hannah Robinson in the fifth minute, banged a shot off the cross bar in the second half and outshot the Mustangs 22-17.
Midwestern flexed its offensive firepower, however, to keep the Southern Nazarene at a safe distance.
Freshman forward
Destinee Williamson struck for her third goal of the season in the third minute of the contest breaking free in the offensive third, banging a shot off of the keeper then finishing at the end line.
Junior striker
Ashley Cottrell answered SNU's equalizer by working her way through the box working form the right wing then spun and banged a shot off of the far post allowing MSU to reclaim a 2-1 advantage in the 21st minute.
"I was glad to see the forward getting goals because we were having trouble creating opportunities for them early in the season," Clarke said.
Junior midfielder
Morgan Hannon knocked in her first goal of the season in the 28th minute on a cross from Cottrell, and then the Mustangs poured it on late in the second half.
Williamson notched her second goal of the game on a through ball from senior midfielder
Katy Catney then
Alex Edwards and
Nicole Coetzer chipped goals in the final minute.
