Mustangs slow down No. 11 Angelo State, 0-0

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Midwestern State faced its toughest challenge of the season in Friday night's Lone Star Conference opener at the ASU Soccer Field.

And the Mustangs delivered its best result working for a scoreless draw with No. 11-ranked Angelo State.

"Both teams had chances to win it, but it was definitely a good result to start conference play against a very, very good team," MSU coach Damian Clarke said. "The midfield and back four played very well. It was a real test against a team that ran at us all day long."

Angelo State brought the nation's second best attack having outscored the opposition by a 28-3 margin while scoring at least four goals in every other contest of the 2014 campaign.

But against Midwestern State, the Rambelles didn't place a shot on goal until the 48th minute of the game.

"We played a really good first half and went to the half feeling really good about our performance particularly in the final 15 minutes," Clarke said. "They are well disciplined and have a lot of movement up top. We defended very well and created chances."

It's not to say Angelo State didn't have chances as the 'Belles failed to convert an opportunity on a one-on-one situation midway through the second half.

Junior forward Ashley Cottrell provided the Mustangs with a similar chance in the 83rd minute, but her shot was cleared off of the line.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Courtney Burnette made three saves to polish off her fifth clean sheet of the season.

"If it wasn't for Courtney's performance, I don't know if we would have held the result," Clarke said. "We walk away from it feeling really good about our defensive effort. That's a team that is going to continue scoring goals."

The Mustangs played to their third scoreless draw of the season while extended their unbeaten streak to eight by moving to 4-0-4.

Midwestern continues on the road to face defending South Central Region champion St. Edward's Sunday in Austin. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Angelo State moved to 6-0-1.
