Williamson, Cottrell lead Mustangs past LCU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State faced a bit of adversity by giving up its first goal in over two weeks Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.

Then the Mustangs flashed their speed from the outside to post a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Lubbock Christian to roll to a third straight win.

"We showed some character and some maturity tonight," MSU coach Damian Clarke said. "They were able to give us some problems in the central midfield, but we were able to gain an advantage on the flanks."

Freshman speedster Destinee Williamson found open space at will producing 11 shots of her own constantly testing her foot speed and putting a high amount of pressure on the LCU's outside backs.

"She was the most dangerous player on the field tonight," Clarke said. "She was tireless and the key was she was able to go at them for 80 minutes tonight."

The freshman striker from Bedford finally powered her way into the box to give the Mustangs the equalizer in the 50th minute as she beat a defender down the right wing tapped the ball past the goalkeeper and won the race to finish the goal with the ball spinning near the end line.

It seemed to be the deserved outcome after the Lubbock Christian took the early lead Jamie Boone flicked in her third goal of the season off of a long throw-in by Kristin Fellows in the 14th minute.

After that, the Mustangs dominated statistically controlling a 27-9 edge in shots while placing nine of their shots on frame.

Junior forward Ashley Cottrell knocked in the game winner staying with a similar run to Williamson's into the box in the 63rd minute as she challenged the keeper then ran down the loose ball to give MSU its first edge of the night.

"It was nice to see Cottrell show up and score the game winner," Clarke said. "It's just what the team needed. She needed it, too, to show the type of goal scorer she is."

Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Courtney Burnette let in her first goal in 425 minutes to break up a string of four consecutive shutouts then made two saves to secure her third win of the season.

The Mustangs extended their home field unbeaten streak to 11 matches, while improving to 3-0-3 on the season. MSU's current six-match unbeaten streak is the second longest from the start of the season in school history.

Midwestern takes on Southern Nazarene Tuesday night at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
