WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- The goals just keep coming for senior midfielder
Andrew Power.
The Irishman from Waterford chipped in two more while leading Midwestern State to a 4-0 win over Lubbock Christian Monday night at the MSU Soccer Field.
"He's hungry to score goals and he's putting himself in great position," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "We're letting him be a little freer in the attack and he's working hard and creating. I am really happy for him."
In Power's view, netting his fifth and sixth goals of the season is just getting back to business as usual. He scored 11 goals at Northern Iowa Area Community College as a freshman before nothing three and five goals in his two seasons at MSU.
"I am just playing the same as I did last year," Power said. "I am just trying to get into the box and improve on that area of my game."
But it was junior defender
Call Casarez that got the Mustangs going against the Chaps when he chipped in a pass in from sophomore midfielder
Paul Sunderland in the 14th minute to give the Mustangs the early advantage.
MSU increased the lead on Power's first goal of the contest in the 50th minute when
Ben Clarvis' serve into the box was redirected by Sunderland finding Power on the back post.
"It was a set piece and I got to the back post and hoped no (defender) would go with me," Power said.
Senior forward
Len Smith opened his season account by converting a penalty kick in the 73rd minute resulting from a hand ball in the box.
Smith remained on the attack crossing a ball from the left wing to Power for his sixth goal of the season to close out the scoring.
"Once we just keep winning, someone will score," Power said. "That's what matters because with our guys we'll keep on keeping clean sheets."
Junior goalkeeper
Nick Petolick made four saves to earn his second straight shutout, but didn't face any trouble inside the 18-yard box.
Midwestern State hits the road to face Newman (Kan.) Friday night in Wichita before returning home to face St. Mary's on Sunday. Kickoff is set for noon.
