WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Dante Taylor tied a career high with 128 rushing yards to lead the Mustangs to a season opening 40-23 win over Missouri S&T Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.
It was all part of a 517-yard onslaught for MSU which won its first season opener since beating the Miners 41-0 to start the 2011 season. The victory was the 10th straight for the Mustangs on the familiar turf at Memorial Stadium.
The Mustangs take on Eastern New Mexico Saturday night at the Lone Star Football Festival at AT&T Stadium in Dallas. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
Midwestern got off to a rough start falling behind Missouri S&T by two scores in the opening five minutes of the game.
Spencer Elrod raced 91 yards on the opening kickoff for a touchdown as it was the first TD return to open the game against the Mustangs since the 2009 playoffs.
The Miners capitalized on blocked punt to push the lead to 14-0 on a Kason Key to Melvin Stovall 24-yard hookup.
Midwestern answered with a 47-yard punt return for a score of their own by
Dominique Williams to get on the board then clawed to within 14-10 on Alex Alkhazshvilly's 40-yard field goald with 2:41 left in the first quarter.
Senior quarterback
Jake Glover rumbled his way into the end zone on a 10-yard keeper to give the Mustangs their first led of the night with 12:22 to go in the first half before Missouri S&T answered with a 2-yard scoring run by Zenel Hudson with 8:33 to play in the second quarter.
MSU struck for two more long scores before the half on Taylor's 58-yard scoring burst before

Levy Wilson on a 65-yards TD connection.
Alkazshvilly hit a 20-yard field goal to post the Mustangs to a 34-20 lead at the half.
Dylan McLain hit two field goals to account for the Mustangs' second half scoring.
The Mustangs racked up 287 rushing hards as Glover finished with 68 yards while redshirt-freshman
Don Jerry had 63 rushing yards.
Coward connected on each of his four passing attempts for 144 yards, while Glover was 6-for-19 for 86 yards.
Wilson paced the receiving corps with 100 yards on two catches.
Junior safety
Marqui Christian had 11 tackles with a stop for loss and an interception to lead the defensive effort for the Mustangs.
Missouri S&T dropped to 0-2.
