Mustangs fall to West Texas A&M in regional opener

CANYON, Texas -- Midwestern State's Katy Vandewater and Kelley Schaefer stayed out each connected for a solo home run, but No. 1 West Texas A&M scored each of its runs with two outs to come away with a 6-2 win in the South Central Regional 1 Championship Friday night at Schaeffer Park.
 
The Mustangs (28-23) take on Texas Woman's in an elimination game Saturday at 4 p.m. The winner survives to play the loser of the winner's bracket final between WT and Metro State at 6:30 p.m.
 
Metro State claimed a 9-4 win over Texas Woman's earlier in the afternoon.
 
West Texas A&M's Renee Erwin and Tyler Wilkinson raced home when Kaisha Dacosin reached on a fielder's choice for the second out of the first inning to give the Lady Buffs the early lead.
 
The Mustangs pulled even at 2-2 on solo homer in the second and third innings by Vandewater and Schaefer.
 
Vandewater homered in her third straight game and has six long balls in her last five games and now has a team-high 16 homers.
 
Schaefer extended her season-best hitting streak to nine games hitting .577 with five homers and 15 RBIs during the stretch.
 
West Texas A&M (52-5) did more two-out damage in the third inning when Erwin stroked a stroked a two-out triple to left field  and Jessica Sipe drew a walk before Kaisha Dacosin launched a homer over the left-center field fence to give the Lady Buffs a 5-2 advantage.
 
WT tacked on another run in the fourth when Wilkinson lined a two-out single to left field to plate Brittany Gehle, who reached on an infield single and stole second.
 
Midwestern State threatened in the seventh inning as Haley Howerton stroked a leadoff single up the middle and Schaefer singled through the left side before WT reliever Hannah Newcomb induced Shelby Carter to ground into a game ending double play.
 
Rita Hokianga allowed two runs on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks to improve to 23-2 on the season.
 
MSU freshman Katlyn Holmes allowed six runs on seven this with six strikeouts and two walks to drop to 11-12.
 
Howerton and Schaefer paced MSU's seven-hit attack with two hits each while Wilkinson and Erwin accounted for two safeties each for West Texas A&M.
