Scalding Vandewater leads Mustangs to sweep of Tarleton State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Katy Vandewater belted two homers to help Midwestern State complete the weekend sweep of Tarleton State taking the finale 8-1 Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

MSU completes the regular season with a 28-21 record and will take the No. 4 seed into next week's Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament finishing league play with a 16-11 mark.

The Mustangs open tournament play with a quarterfinal matchup against Cameron Friday afternoon at Schaefer Park in Canyon, Texas. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.

With a win, the Mustangs face host and top-seeded West Texas A&M in Friday night's semifinal round at 6:30 p.m. The championship game is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Vandewater continued to pound TexAnn pitching going 3-for-3 with five RBIs as she launched a three-run homer to left-center field in the fourth inning and led off the sixth with a solo shot down the left-field line. She finished series play going 8-for-9 with three double and three homers while driving in 12 runs.

The Mustangs broke the game open early as senior catcher Kim Jerrick drew a leadoff walk and stole second before sophomore outfielder Haley Howerton reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on the play.

Both came around to score on Katelyn Vinson's two-run single up the middle to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.

The Mustangs tacked on a third run on Vandewater's sacrifice fly to center field push the advantage to three runs.

That is all the run support starter Katlyn Holmes needed. The freshman from Gunter, who was coming off of a perfect game performance on Friday, limited the TexAnns to one run on seven hits while striking out four to improve to 11-10 on the season.

The Mustangs notched another run in the third when Erin Knox's single up the middle plated Baylee Voigt, who had reached on a one-out single to left field.

It was Vandewater after that as the junior blasted her 12th homer of the season to drive Howerton and Kelley Schaefer, who reached on walks, in the fourth inning to extend the MSU lead to 7-1.

Vandewater lined her 13th homer down the left field line in the sixth inning to close scoring.

Tarleton State closes the regular season at 20-29 and 10-17.
