No. 18 Midwestern wins 20th, rolls UTPB 9-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The 18th-ranked Midwestern State Mustangs won 20 matches in a season for the first time since 2005 as they hit the magic number with a 9-0 shutout of Texas-Permian Basin Saturday at the MSU Tennis Center.

MSU (20-3) also established a school record for the longest winning streak in the NCAA era with its 11th straight win.  UTPB (10-12) lost its fourth straight match.

"It was something we really wanted," said MSU's Kayla Casey of the 20-win season.  "We were really prepared this year to pull it off.  We knew we could do it."

"A 20-win season is special," said Mustangs coach Scott Linn.  "It's a bench mark that means you're a great team."

The lead tandem of Casey and Taylor Coffman set the pace for Midwestern against the Falcons.

The nationally 20th ranked doubles pair won 8-5 at No. 1 against Lisa Roslanova/Olivia Baltazar.

Then 33rd ranked Casey handed Roslanova 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Coffman shutout Shelby Greene 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.

At No. 2 doubles, Lauren Pineda/Sydney Briner rolled over Alexandra Maytubby/Rebecca Stafford 8-2, and Courtney Anderson/Paige Boykin took No. 3 with an 8-2 win against Greene/Sarah Palacio.

Anderson easily beat Baltazar 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, as Pineda won at No. 4 against Sofia Ochoa Arminana 6-0, 6-3, and Briner blanked Sydney Holdampf 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

Boykin won the closest point of the contest, beating UTPB's Maytubby 6-1, 2-6, 10-4 at No. 5 that ended the day.

The Mustangs are off until next Friday afternoon when they play Texas A&M-Kingsville in the semifinal of the Lone Star Conference Tournament in Southlake, Texas.
