Mustangs double up Texas A&M-Kingsville in Game 2, 8-4

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State used middle-of-the-order pop to roll to an 8-4 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville 8-4 in Game Saturday night at Mustangs Park.
 
The win extended MSU's season-best winning streak to seven games while improving to 21-9 on the season. The Mustangs stretched their Lone Star Conference lead to two games in the loss column over Angelo State at 9-1.
 
Midwestern, which has won 13 of its last 14 games, closes a four-game set against the Javelinas with a twin bill on Sunday. First pitches are set for noon and 2 p.m. at Mustangs Park.
 
The 3-4-5 trio of Kelley Schaefer, Katy Vandewater and Katelyn Vinson combined for six of the MSU's 10 hits while driving in seven runs in the win.
 
Vinson keyed a two-run first inning with a double to the left-field gap to played Schaefer and Vandewater, who had each smashed singles through the left-side of the infield.
 
Vandewater jacked her ninth homer of the season on a three-run shot to center field to cap a five-run uprising in the bottom of the fourth inning after the Javelinas ran out to a 4-2 lead with single runs in the first and second innings and two runs in the top of the fourth.
 
Schaefer, who finished 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs, clubbed her fourth homer of the season off of the scoreboard in right field to cap the scoring in the sixth.
 
Sophomore starter Kat Batey (4-3) battled through four innings allowing three earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk to earn the victory.
 
Freshman Katlyn Holmes extended her scoreless inning to 16 by allowing two hits over the final three frames to earn her first collegiate save.
 
Ariel Kellogg (3-9) allowed eight runs on 10 hits in six innings with four walks and three strikeouts to take the loss for the Javelinas.
 
Bailey Offill, Erica Graham and Myrissa Sanchez had two hits each to pace Texas A&M-Kingsville which fell to 7-22 and 2-9.
