Voigt hits walkoff as Mustangs take 2 of 3 from #1 West Texas A&M

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Freshman Baylee Voigt's walkoff homer carried Midwestern State to a 3-2 win over No. 1-ranked West Texas A&M in Game 1 Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The Buffs came back to claim the series finale 3-0, but still MSU took two of three from WT after claiming a 6-2 win on Friday night.

The Mustangs (14-9, 2-1) take on Eastern New Mexico in a three-game series next weekend in Portales. The teams square off for a doubleheader Friday at noon and 2 p.m. before playing a single game Saturday at noon.

Freshman pitcher Erin Knox was excellent in the circle in the opener claiming a win in her sixth consecutive start to improve to 7-2. The right-hander limited the LSC's top hitting team to two runs on six hits in eight innings to lower her season ERA to 3.85.

Voigt made the most of her first collegiate start behind the plate in place of All American Kim Jerrick, who sat out after she was hit by a softball in the seventh inning on Friday night.

Voigt delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single to center field to plate the first two runs in the bottom of the third inning.

West Texas A&M countered with back-to-back home runs by Renee Erwin and Jessica Sipe in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2.

The teams exchanged zeroes until Voigt launched her sixth homer of the season over the center field fence with one out in the eighth inning.

WT junior Rita Hokianga (8-1) suffered her first loss of the season allowing three runs - one earned - on four hits with nine strikeouts and five walks in 7 1/3 innings.

The Buffs rallied for three runs in the sixth innings to provide the difference in Game 2 to make a tough luck loser of Kat Batey, who fell to 2-3 despite limiting WT to three runs on six hits in a 7-inning complete game.

Sophomore Tori Bayer improved to 4-0 allowing two hits in five innings before giving way to Hokianga, who clinched her first save of the season closing out the final two innings. It was the first time MSU has been shutout this season.
