Vandewater extends hitting streak to 11, Knox has 3 doubles in 11-2 rout of UTPB

ODESSA, Texas -- Midwestern State's Katy Vandewater extended her hitting streak to 11 games while leading a four-homer barrage as the Mustangs rolled to an 11-2 run-rule win over Texas-Permian Basin here in Game 2 Tuesday afternoon.

The Mustangs, who completed a sweep of the Falcons with two run-rule wins to improve to 12-8 on the season, begin Lone Star Conference play this weekend against West Texas A&M.

The Highway 287 Challenge Cup series begins with a single game Friday night at 7 p.m. at Mustangs Park and concludes with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m.

Vandewater extended her season-best streak with a double to left field in the first inning then stroked her second homer of the afternoon -- and sixth of the season -- down the left-field line to lead off the third inning.

The transfer from Weatherford College is hitting .457 (16-of-35) during the streak with three doubles and four home runs while driving in 10 runs.

Freshman outfielder Erin Knox joined in on MSU's 13-hit parade by drilling doubles in her first three at bats of the contest to finish 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI. She becomes just the third player in program history to record three two-baggers in a game joining former LSC Player of the Year Lauren Craig (vs. Central Oklahoma/March 10, 2009) and Tabitha Yannetti (at Southeastern Oklahoma/April 11, 2008).

The Mustangs dazzled in the third inning with Vandewater igniting the four-run frame with the leadoff homer before Knox dropped a double into the left-field gap.

Freshman Baylee Voigt followed with a two-out, two-run homer to left field for her fifth long ball of the season then Chelsey Wall connected for her fourth homer of the year to push the Mustangs' advantage to 6-0.

The Mustangs stayed on the attack in the fourth as Kelley Schaefer led off with a single through the right side of the infield then Vandewater reached on an error.

Knox followed with her third double of the contest to plate another run to set up a three-run, pitch-hit bomb by Krisha Hamm to cap the inning to stretch the lead to 10-0.

In all, the Mustangs mashed eight homers in the twin bill sweep of UTPB to bring their season total to an LSC-best 37 for the season. The number matches the fourth most in a single season 20 games into the campaign.

Texas-Permian Basin rallied for a pair of unearned runs in the in the bottom of the fourth to spoil MSU starter Katlyn Holmes' shutout bid.

Holmes picked up the win to improve to 4-4 allowing no earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Holly Harrington took the loss to fall to 2-5 on the season for the Falcons, who fell to 3-14.
