SAN ANTONIO -- Freshman
Erin Knox claimed her third straight win in the circle to help Midwestern State end a three-game skid by taking a 2-1 result over Western Oregon Sunday afternoon here at the St. Mary's Rattler Invitational.
The Mustangs close tournament play later in the afternoon against host and No. 14-ranked St. Mary's.
Knox improved to 5-2 on the season after working her way out of a pair of bases loaded, one-out jams in the second and fifth innings.
The West, Texas product allowed singles to Raina Reece and Bridjet Box in the second frame and loaded the bases when she plunked Ashlie Gardner, but Knox settled in to strike out the next batter to escape unscathed.
She allowed two infield singles with one in the fifth inning and packed the bases when she walked Kelsie Gardner. The Wolves managed their only run when Amanda Evola rolled out to shortstop then Knox worked out of the inning on a fly out to center field by Reece.
Knox finished with four strikeouts while walking one and didn't an extra-base hit.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as senior catcher
Kim Jerrick drilled a single through the left side of the infield for the first of her three safeties for the game.
Jerrick came around to score on
Katy Vandewater's double to left field to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. The double extended Vandewater's season-best hitting streak to eight games.
Freshman
Baylee Voigt launched her fourth home run of the season in the second inning to give the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage and Knox made it stand the rest of the way.
Western Oregon's Kelli Demianew took the loss to fall to 1-4 on the season despite limiting the MSU attack to two runs on five hits in six innings.
The Wolves fell to 5-9 on the season.
