KINGSVILLE, Texas -- Hot shooting Texas A&M-Kingsville dealt Midwestern State a tough 83-77 loss Saturday afternoon at Steinke Center.
"We didn't come ready to play today," MSU coach
Noel Johnson said. "We knew they shot better at home and we just didn't capitalize on our opportunities."
The loss dropped the Mustangs to 16-10 on the season and to 8-7 in Lone Star Conference play, while Texas A&M-Kingsville improved to 10-15 and 5-10.
Senior guard Rosalie Cutri matched a season-high with 25 points as the Javelinas shot a campaign-best 57.7 percent from the field.
Texas A&M-Kingsville, who ripped the nets at a 63-percent clip in the second half, used a 17-5 run to extend the advantage to a game-high 18 points when Cutri completed a three-point play for a 77-59 lead with 4:28 to play.
MSU junior
Lisa Hampton, who finished with 15 points, drilled three of her five 3-pointers in the closing to help the Mustangs claw back to within six points, but that is as close as they could get.
Junior forward
Andrea Carter also matched a season high with 25 points while shooting 8-of-11 from the field and 9-of-10 from the charity. It's her seventh 20-point effort of the season as Carter raised her season average to 16.0 points a game. She also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Junior guard
Janae McJunkins added a season-high 11 points while pulling down four rebounds to go along with two steals in 20 minutes of court time.
Texas A&M-Kingsville's starting five accounted for all but two of its 83 points including double-digit efforts from Lindsey Mahone (17 points, 8 rebounds), Ashley Viera (16 points), Lauren Jay (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Sheana Jones (11 points).
Midwestern State closes the regular season Saturday against Cameron. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at Aggie Gym in Lawton.
