AUSTIN, Texas – The 19th ranked Midwestern State Mustangs collected a great season-opening win on Friday, beating No. 43 St. Edward's 6-3 at the Brother Strohmeyer Courts.
The Mustangs started off with the 2-1 lead in doubles, then claimed all but the top two singles points to go to 1-0 on the season. St. Ed's fell to 0-2 with the loss.
The Mustangs opened with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 Doubles.
MSU's
Lauren Pineda and Madeline Schorlemmer shutout Breanne Hesseltine and Tatiana Marchizano 8-0 at No. 3, with
Taylor Coffman and
Kayla Casey bagged Rafaela Haegele and Summer Biggs 8-4 at No. 2.
St. Ed's claimed No. 1 Doubles as the 15th ranked team of Brooke Hughes and Alexandra Khadhyzan handed MSU's
Courtney Anderson and
Amy Clifton an 8-3 loss.
In singles action, Coffman led the way for MSU from the No. 3 spot, coming back from a 6-3 deficit in the first set to beat Haegele 3-6, 6-4, 10-6.
The bottom of the lineup wasn't that close.
Pineda handed Biggs 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4, Anderson swept Hesseltine 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, and Schorlemmer blanked Marchizano 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
St. Ed's Khadhyzan beat Clifton at No. 2 6-3, 6-3.
The highlight singles match came at the No. 1 spot, as 38th ranked Casey of MSU faced 47th ranked Hughes of SEU.
Casey took the first set 6-4, only to have Hughes battle back for the second 6-4. Hughes continued in the final set for a 6-4 win to take the point.
Midwestern is in action twice on Saturday in San Antonio as the Mustangs meet now Division I Incarnate Word at 10 a.m., then travel across the freeway to take on Division III Trinity at 3 p.m.
