AUSTIN, Texas – The 16th ranked Midwestern State Mustangs opened the season in a strong way, crushing 25th ranked St. Edward's 7-1 on the road on Friday.
The Mustangs (1-0) lost only at No. 2 Doubles and the teams ended the match with the No. 6 singles unfinished. St. Edward's fell to 1-4 on the season.
MSU's No. 3 doubles team of
Jarrod Liston and
Zack Santagate got the match started right with an 8-3 win over SEU's Alexandre Bueno and Adrian Garza.
The Hilltoppers countered at the No. 2 doubles spot with Patrick Clynes and Maximo Agoglia beating the Mustangs
Kacper Boborykin and
Kyle Davidson 8-4 to even the match.
But MSU got the advantage they would not relinquish when the Mustangs top duo of
Tomas Grejtak and
Ramon Toyos claimed the tiebreak 7-4 to defeat Felix Bake and Pedro Bronstrup 9-8.
MSU rolled in the singles, dropping only one set.
No. 46 Boborykin, playing at No. 1 for MSU, defeated Bronstrup 7-5, 6-2, while No. 25 Davidson beat Clynes 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 at No. 2.
Toyos battled Bake to three sets at No. 3 before claiming a 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 victory.
MSU's Christopher Norrie took out Agoglia 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4, as Grejtak handed Garza a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 5.
Liston was ahead 4-2 at No. 6 against Bueno when the match was halted.
MSU plays twice on Saturday in San Antonio as the Mustangs meet now Division I Incarnate Word at 10 a.m., then travel across US 281 to take on Division III Trinity at 3 p.m.
