Mustangs fall to No. 5 West Texas A&M in OT, 87-77

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 5 West Texas A&M got all it wanted from Midwestern State Wednesday night

But the Lady Buffs outscored MSU 16-6 in the overtime session to slip out of D.L. Ligon Coliseum with an 87-77.

It was a replay of last season's Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament championship game and it had the same look as junior guard Dianna Jones drained a 3-pointer to tie the game with 24 seconds left.

WT senior Devin Griffin was fouled on her way to the basket with 1.8 seconds remaining, but both per her free throws were well off the mark to send the game into overtime.

The Mustangs held a brief lead in the extra period when Taylor Dowd converted a nice assist from Andrea Carter for a layup for a 73-72 edge 45 seconds into the overtime period.

The teams would match for a 75-75 tie after a Carter layup with 2:55 to play but the Lady Buffs rattled off a 12-2 run the rest of the way to claim their 13th straight to improve to 20-1 on the season and 11-0 in the LSC.

Carter finished the game with 18 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard Kirsti Degelia (10 points, four rebounds, four assists) and senior guard Dianna Jones (10 points, six assists, four rebounds) also finished in double figures.

Junior guards Janae McJunkins and Lisa Hampton pitched in nine points each off of the bench.

West Texas A&M senior forward Devin Griffin paced all scorers with 21 points and five rebounds, while Sally Higgins added 19 points, five rebounds and five assists in a reserve role.

Midwestern State (14-9, 6-6) takes on Eastern New Mexico Saturday night at Greyhound Arena in Portales. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
