WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Dianna Jones' driving layup with 1.0 seconds remaining lifted Midwestern State to a 70-69 win over Cameron Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
"I told her the paint is your's and nobody can stop you," MSU coach
Noel Johnson said. "It's no mystery who I'm going to late in the game."
Jones went hard left, took an extra dribble and beat the Aggie defender to the glass to provide the difference in the Mustangs' third consecutive victory to improve to 13-7 overall and move to 5-4 in Lone Star Conference play.
The Mustangs, who let a 16-point first half lead slip away, used a late stand to slip past Cameron, who fell to 9-9 and 1-7.
"This one was a learning experience. We were in a haze when we had to be aggressive against the zone," Johnson said. "But we were calm, cool and collected down the stretch."
Midwestern takes on rival Tarleton State Wednesday night at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
The Mustangs used a strong offensive effort in the opening half using a brisk start to jump out to a 7-0 lead. MSU would push the advantage to 16 on a pair of occasions at 28-12 and 40-24 before settling on a 12-point bulge at the half.
But the Aggies stormed back in the second half on the strength of an 11-2 run to pull within 51-49 on a Christina Caddy trey with 10:20 to play and led by as many as five points when Ali Brown canned another triple to give CU a 69-64 advantage with 2:25 to go.
But
Andrea Carter worked her way to the charity stripe to convert two free throws then canned a 17-footer to pull the Mustangs within a point at 69-68.
She then tracked down her eighth rebound of the game on the defensive end to set up Jones' dash for the goal with a second remaining.
Carter finished the night with a team-high 20 appoints while senior guard
Kirsti Degelia pitched in a season-high 18 points to go along with five assists and Jones notched 13 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Junior forward
Taylor Dowd added 10 points -- all in the first half -- off of the bench.
Jazzmine Robinson poured in a game-high 23 points to lead the Aggies.
