McNeal gets hot, Mustangs work double overtime to take down Lynn

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Midwestern State overcame an 11-point deficit with 8:06 remaining to come away with a 90-83 win in double overtime over Lynn (Fla.) Monday night at de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center.

MSU junior guard Bretson McNeal 24 of his game-high 27 points following halftime including back-to-back 3-pointers to polish off an 8-0 run to pull the Mustangs even at 61-61 with 1:54 to play in regulation.

All of this after the Mustangs overcame an 8-point deficit in the first half to take a 37-32 lead on a Khapri Alston outback with 15 minutes to play.

But Lynn's Kaleb Clyburn hit two triples and Fred Landers canned another consecutively to key a 19-4 run for the Fighting Knights as LU extended the edge to 54-43 when Ben Berry buried another trey with 8:06 to play.

The Mustangs trimmed the lead to six on four occasions before McNeal came through with back-to-back 3s before Hershell Grant converted a pair of free throws to give MSU a 63-61 lead with 1:06 to play.

Clyburn answered the bell with a runner in the lane with 60 seconds left to send the game to the first overtime period.

The Mustangs pushed out to a 69-65 edge in the first overtime before Landers and Clyburn connected on consecutive 3-pointers to give Lynn a 71-69 lead with 18 seconds to play.

Alston converted a nice pass from senior forward Xavier Blackburn for a left-handed layup in the closing seconds to force another overtime frame.

Midwestern once again pushed out to a commanding lead when McNeal connected on a pair of free throws for an 83-75 lead with 1:49 to go, but Aaron Harrison canned two straight triples to pull the Fighting Knights within a bucket with 1:07 to play.

Lynn managed just one more field in the final minute as the Mustangs cinched the victory going 5-for-6 from the charity stripe in the final minute of the second overtime.

Midwestern controlled the battle on the glass by a 33-18 margin after the half to overcome turning the ball over 27 times for the win.

McNeal finished the night hitting 7-of-15 shots including four 3-pointers while going 9-of-10 from the charity stripe, while Alston finished with 16 points and six rebounds in 26 minutes off of the bench.

Blackburn chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds while Grant had 12 points and eight rebounds.

David Johnson joined Clyburn with 16 points each to pace the Fighting Knights, who dipped to 6-1 on the season.

Midwestern State takes on South Dakota Mines Thursday night at Goodell Gymnasium in Rapid City, S.D. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m. (Central Time).
