DENTON, Texas — Teams aren't supposed to win games giving away 32 turnovers while surrendering 16 offensive rebounds.
Someone forgot to tell Midwestern State as the Mustangs overcame it all to claim a 67-60 win over Central Oklahoma Friday night in the TWU Pioneer Premiere at Kitty Magee Arena.
"We did things that don't usually add up to getting a win tonight," MSU coach
Noel Johnson said. "But these seniors have a will and determination to overcome a lot."
Senior guard
Lisa Hampton, who matched a career high with 19 points, connected on five 3-pointers including back-to-back triples during a 10-0 run early in the second half after Central Oklahoma established its biggest lead of the game at 39-29 a minute and a half into the second half.
But it was senior point guard
Dianna Jones who got the Mustangs going after going to the bench halfway into the opening half with two fouls.
"Dianna made an effort to make sure (Hampton) kept getting the ball in the corners of the zone," Johnson said. "The really hurt us when she was out of the game."
Jones finished a transition layup then hit
Shambreka Jones on a baseline cut to tie the game at 39-39 with 15:36 to play.
The teams exchanged baskets over the next few minutes before
Dianna Jones fueled another 7-0 spurt hitting another fast break layup before finding Hampton for another triple to give MSU the lead for good at 50-45 with 11:27 to play.
If
Dianna Jones fueled the lead, then senior forward
Andrea Carter secured it delivering another monster game.
The Angleton product scored 16 points and ripped down a game-high 18 rebounds to go along with four steals as the Mustangs dominated the boards by a +11 margin in the second half and 47-33 for the game.
Senior guard
Shatoia Gober scored double figures for the third time this season finishing with 11 points and six rebounds while
Dianna Jones piled up a 13-points, 6-rebound, 5-assist stat line.
Central Oklahoma sophomore Olivia Mason poured in 22 points off of the bench as the Bronchos dipped to 2-2 on the season.
Midwestern State (3-1) takes on St. Mary's (Texas) Saturday afternoon at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
