Alston paces Mustangs over Drovers, 86-65

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Khapri Alston poured in a team-high 19 points off of the bench to lead Midwestern State to an 86-65 rout of Science & Arts (Okla.) Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
 
The junior from Chicago knocked down 8-of-13 shots while adding five rebounds to help MSU improve to 2-1 on the season.
 
The Mustangs look to avenge their lone loss of the season Sunday afternoon against Colorado State-Pueblo at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
 
MSU used a 20-3 run late in the opening half punctuated by a hard left-handed dunk by Abiodun Adegoke with 4:31 to go to spin a 17-16 deficit into a 36-20 lead.
 
Junior guard Bretson McNeal got the Mustangs going in the opening half scoring 12 of his 14 points before the half connecting on 5-of-11 shots from the field including a pair of 3-pointers.
 
USAO senior guard Ed'Lexus Collier ripped the nets for a game-high 26 points while pulling down seven rebounds, but could do little to keep the Drovers in the contest.
 
The Mustangs shot 50 percent from the field as junior guard Hershell Grant matched a season-high with 12 points while making his first start of the season.
 
MSU led by as many as 28 points in the second half forcing the Drovers into 23 turnovers.
 
Senior forward Tavarion Nix pitched in nine points off of the bench while senior forward Xavier Blackburn finished with eight points and four rebounds.
 
Redshirt-freshman Devante Pullum had seven points and four assists while senior Derrell Gibbs finished with six points, six rebounds and six assists as neither point guard committed a turnover in 39 combined minutes.
 
Science & Arts (Okla.) dropped to 1-4 on the season.
