ON THE PITCH
Midwestern State closes the regular season with a pair of road contests taking on West Texas A&M Thursday night in Canyon before facing Eastern New Mexico Saturday in Portales.
 
SCOUTING THE BUFFS
- West Texas A&M has allowed just one goal in a three-match unbeaten streak (2-0-1) since dropping three straight against Fort Hays State (Kan.), Eastern New Mexico and Midwestern State.
- Senior midfielder Vitor Cardoso is WT's top producer with six goals and four assists for a team-high 16 points.
- Senior midfielder Christopher Hutton is the Buffs' second option with four goals and five assists for 13 total points. Hutton has tallied points in three of his last four matches including a goal against Midwestern State on Oct. 11.
- Sophomore forward Chris Johnson is second on the side with five goals and also accounted for a goal in a 3-2 loss to the Mustangs on Oct. 11.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Satorie has permitted one goal in his last 285 minutes between the posts to lower his season goals against average to 1.03. He has posted five shutouts including clean sheets the last two times out against Eastern New Mexico and Texas A&M International.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES
- Midwestern State meets West Texas A&M for the 49th time on the pitch Thursday night in Canyon.
- The Mustangs own a 28-17-3 advantage in the series which dates back to the 1975 season.
- MSU has won the last four meetings between the teams claiming a season sweep in 2013.
- The Mustangs are 13-9-2 all time against the Buffs in Canyon.
 
SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS
- Eastern New Mexico rides a seven-match unbeaten streak into Monday night's match against Midwestern State.
- The Greyhounds are 5-0-2 during the streak which includes draws against Lubbock Christian and West Texas A&M.
- The unbeaten stretch came on the heels of a five-match winless skid (0-4-1) from Sept. 9-25.
- Senior midfielder Abeyneh Crosby leads the ENMU attack with four goals and three assists. He scored in four consecutive games from Sept. 25-Oct. 2.
- Sophomore forward Ryan McManus and freshman defender Gil Munoz boast three goals each, while sophomore midfielder Jose Hernandez is the team's top playmaker with five assists.
- Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper James Gutierrez has shutouts in three of its last six matches to lower his season goals against average to 0.94.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES
- Midwestern State meets Eastern New Mexico for the 23rd time on the pitch Saturday afternoon at the ENMU Soccer Field.
- The Mustangs own a commanding 17-2-3 mark in the series which dates back to the 2004 season.
- MSU is 7-1-2 all time against the Greyhounds in Portales.
- Midwestern State and ENMU have played to draws in three of the last five meetings.
- Eastern New Mexico's lone win of the series came in a 2-1 results on Oct. 7, 2011 in Portales before the Greyhounds claimed their first victory in Wichita Falls by a 2-1 count Monday night.
 
MUSTANGS NOTEBOOK
- Midwestern State heads into its final two regular season matches carrying the South Central Region's No. 2 ranking.
- The Mustangs had its 12-match home unbeaten streak snapped in a 2-1 loss to Eastern New Mexico Monday night at the MSU Soccer Field.
- Senior forward Len Smith (Baton Rouge, La. / Wakeland HS (Tulsa)) became the 38th member of MSU's 50-Point Club with a two-goal outing last week against Southwestern Christian. He added two more tallies against Texas A&M International to boost his career totals to 26 goals and five assists over the past three seasons for a total of 57 points.
- Senior midfielder Andrew Power (Waterford, Ireland / St. Paul's Secondary (Northern Iowa ACC)) needs one point to become the 39th member of the 50-Point Club. He tallied his team-best 12th goal of the season Monday night against Eastern New Mexico to raise his career totals to 20 goals and nine assists for 49 total points.
- Sophomore midfielder Paul Sunderland (Manchester, England / Wright Robinson Secondary) has notched assists in each of his last two matches to match junior teammate Ben Clarvis (Newton Abbot, England / Torquay Boys Grammar) for the team lead with eight. The duo is tied for 11th in NCAA Division II in assists per game at (0.57) and is 12th in total assists.
- Junior goalkeeper Nick Petolick (Frisco, Texas / Wakeland HS (Oral Roberts)) needs one shutout to match David Stockton (17 shutouts from 2001-04) for second-place on MSU all-time list. Raul Herrera tops the list with 21 (2005, 09-10).
- Midwestern State ranks ninth in NCAA Division II in total goals (40.0) and is 10th in scoring offense with 2.67 goals per game.
 
THE DOUG ELDER ERA
- Doug Elder is in his 15th season at the helm of Midwestern State.
- Elder remains NCAA Division II winningest active coach in terms of percentage at 217-50-28 (.783).
- Elder is a six-time NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year (2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011).
- Elder's teams have advanced to the NCAA Division II postseason nine times while making five national quarterfinal appearances twice advancing to the Final Four.
- Elder needs five wins to overtake Howard Patterson (221-85-20 from 1973-89) as the program's all-time leader in coaching wins.
