SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Skyler Warrick came up big with a pair of blocks and steal to seal a 67-63 win over Angelo State Wednesday night at Junell Center/Stephens Arena.
Â
"I just wipe my brow and we got this win," MSU coach
Noel Johnson said. "This was the battle of the zones tonight. I'm proud of how hard the girls fought tonight. They found a way to win."
Â
The Mustangs needed every bit of the senior forward from Wellington's hustle to overcome a massive dry spell over the final 8:36 of the contest to snap a two-game skid while improving to 11-7 on the season and 3-4 in Lone Star Conference play.
Â
"We got impatient down the stretch trying to make something happen," Johnson said. "We were getting zero points for 1 or 2 points and that's how they were able to get back into the game."
Â
Senior guard
Kirsti Degelia banged in her third 3-pointer of the game to give the Mustangs a 60-52 lead with 8:36 to play after MSU had led by as many as 14 points earlier half.
Â
But Midwestern would go 0-for-12 with turnover the rest of the way allowing the Rambelles to claw back to within 63-61 after Rochelle Norris hit one of two free throws with 1:50 to play.
Â
It was Warrick who provided the defensive lift for MSU with a block of Michelle Rosewood before she connected on a pair of free throws to push the advantage back to four. Warrick ended each of the Rambelles' next two possessions by redirected another shot and made a clutch steal allowing the Mustangs to extend the advantage back out to 67-61 when
Dianna Jones hit two free throws with 19 seconds to go.
Â
"(Warrick) had great timing on that and was able to get her hand on that," Johnson said. "I'm proud of the way she was able to come through for us."
Â
The Mustangs came out firing in the opening due in large part to the duo over Carter and Degelia.
Â
Carter connected on 7-of-9 shots from the field good for 18 points in the opening half to help the Mustangs blister the net at a 55.6 percent clip in the opening half. She completed her seventh double-double of the season by booking 20 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Â
"In the second half, they really keyed in on her," Johnson said. "She stayed after it to get some key rebounds and continued to contribute."
Â
Degelia scored eight of her 13 points in the first half while going 3-of-7 from the arc.
Â
Jones notched eight points and dished out six assists, while Warrick and
Lisa Hampton had six points each.
Â
Angelo State's Amanda Weaver splashed in four treys to lead the Rambelles with 16 points off of the bench as ASU dropped to 9-8 on the season and to 3-4 in LSC play.
Â
Midwestern State returns to action Saturday afternoon against Texas A&M-Kingsville at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
