Mustangs fall to Tarleton State, 57-51

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- It was typical tale of two halves Tuesday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Midwestern State dominated the first half but just couldn't construct a big enough lead before Tarleton State roared back to claim a 57-51 Lone Star Conference.

The 14th-ranked TexAnns won their 11th consecutive game to improve to 13-1 on the season and snapped a four-game losing streak to MSU. The Mustangs fell to 10-6 on the season and 2-3 in league play.

Midwestern dominated the glass in the opening half by grabbing 23 of the first 27 rebounds paced by a season-high from junior forward Taylor Dowd who snagged five of her six in the opening half of play.

The Mustangs sprinted out to score the first 10 points of the game, but could only expand their lead out to 24-11 on a Lisa Hampton jumper with 10:08 before half.

MSU struggled to a 36.4 percent shooting in the opening half allowing the TexAnns to claw back to within 31-24 at halftime.

Tarleton State senior forward Kiara Wright, who had two points and one rebounds in six minutes in the opening frame, erupted for 13 points and 14 rebounds in the second half lead the TexAnns charge.

TSU stormed out of halftime on a 9-2 run to claim its first lead when Brianna Bledsoe connected on a 3-pointer for a 35-33 advantage with 16:38 to play.

The teams exchanged the lead six more times down the stretch, but the Mustangs would never lead by more than a bucket.

Senior guard Kirsti Degelia was the lone MSU player in double figures finishing the night with 12 points including a pair of treys, while junior guard Shatoia Gober added nine points and five rebounds in 17 minutes off of the bench.

Wright finished the game with 15 points and 15 points to lead the TexAnns while Bledoe added 14 points.

Midwestern State takes on Texas Woman's Sunday afternoon in Denton. Tipoff at Kitty Magee Arena is set for 6 p.m.
